Intelligence and Nature(自然知/フォトニックインテリジェンス)

    Modern society is becoming highly reliant on artificial intelligence (AI). Naruse is pursuing the importance of photonics and materials science research in the age of AI, which may be referred to as Photonic Intelligence, or more in general Natural Intelligence

    As described in the page of Research, he was the first to theoretically and experimentally demonstrate single-photon-based and near-field photon-based reinforcement learning [SciRep2015, JAP2014, SciRep2013]. Today, AI relies on computer algorithms, and it suffers from the theoretical limitation known as the von Neumann bottleneck. What is significant in photonics (and materials) is that nature provides a massive amount of solution searching instantaneously. The significance of such an approach is highly recognized throughout the world; for example, MIT Technology Review reported his research with the headline “First Demonstration of Photonic Intelligence.”

    In conducting his research, a variety of approaches have been taken ranging from theory, simulations, and experiments. Meanwhile, he is very closely collaborating with collaborators both domestically and internationally.
