Natural Intelligence / Intellect in Nature(自然知/フォトニックインテリジェンス)

    Modern society is becoming highly reliant on artificial intelligence (AI). Naruse is pursuing the importance of photonics and materials science research in the age of AI, which may be referred to as Photonic Intelligence, or more in general Natural Intelligence

    As described in the page of Research, he was the first to theoretically and experimentally demonstrate single-photon-based and near-field photon-based reinforcement learning [SciRep2015, JAP2014, SciRep2013]. Today, AI relies on computer algorithms, and it suffers from the theoretical limitation known as the von Neumann bottleneck. What is significant in photonics (and materials) is that nature provides a massive amount of solution searching instantaneously. The significance of such an approach is highly recognized throughout the world; for example, MIT Technology Review reported his research with the headline “First Demonstration of Photonic Intelligence.”

    In conducting his research, a variety of approaches have been taken ranging from theory, simulations, and experiments. Meanwhile, he is very closely collaborating with collaborators both domestically and internationally.

ナノ光学と光カオスを用いた超高速意思決定メカニズムの創成

 本研究では、人工知能で重要な強化学習の根幹にある意思決定問題を、光に固有の性質とその極限性能を生かし「物理的に」解決します。具体的には、光の微細化の極限を生かし、フォトクロミック材料とナノ光学を用いた意思決定、及び光の広帯域性の極限を生かし、光カオスによる超高速な意思決定を実現します。光の特長を活用し、通信チャネルの瞬時割り当て、解探索等での瞬時アービトレーションなどの重要な応用を支えるAI時代の革新的光機能を創成します。
