About

Mahnomen SWCD Organization:

The Mahnomen County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) was organized by the Veteran's Agricultural Classes and their instructors, local farmers and business men, assisted by the Agricultural Extension Service. A public hearing was held by the State Soil Conservation Committee on August 18, 1949 and a favorable referendum was held on September 28, 1949. A certificate of organization was issued by the Secretary of State on October 25, 1949. Election of Supervisors was held on December 12, 1949.

The SWCD was originally developed to assist landowners/operators, governmental units and towns/villages in conserving and maintaining soil and water resources. Today the function of the SWCD has expanded to include Local Water Management (LWM) and the MN Wetland Conservation Act (WCA). The main role of the SWCD is to take available financial, technical and educational resources, whatever their source, and focus or coordinate them so that they meet the needs of the local land user.

Mahnomen SWCD Mission Statement:

"Protect and Maintain Mahnomen County's Natural Resources, While Supporting Agriculture and Producers/Landowners, To Improve Mahnomen County's Economy."
