Accomplishments

My Accomplishments in Outstanding and Effective Teaching Strategies and Innovations through my long years at Georgia State University - Perimeter College (Over 25 years):

a. I transformed my classes into Flipped model Classes.

b. I developed different labs through the years. Recently I did develop the following: hybrid chemistry labs. In 2013, the demand for a hybrid Survey of Chemistry lab was announced and I was fortunate to have the full responsibility and development of such a lab. I taught the hybrids Survey of Chemistry 1 labs for about 3 years. The hybrid labs had helped accommodating more students at the same time slots. Hybrid labs have 50% on campus and 50% online using simulations and videos. The students did perform very closely to the fully face to face labs.

c. I developed labs based on Kits (kits were bought from eScience lab company). In 2016, I was given the task to develop the fully online lab using a kit. The chemistry kit for the lab was bought from eScience Labs company located in Colorado and now in Florida. At the beginning the students did perform well or close to the face to face and hybrid labs but later on, we had higher DWF % rates for this fully online lab using the chemistry kit. Part of the problem was the higher cost of the kit itself (around $200) and the logistics in delivery this kit on time with some parts of its being broken or destroyed during the shipping time.

d. I developed Problem Based Learning Labs. I developed a Survey of Chemistry lab which face to face and I did add to it the Problem based Learning Components. The lab did very well, and the students liked this type of approach. This was in the years 2004 - 2008.

e. I did develop on year 2020a Master Course Template for Survey of Chemistry lab based on kitchen chemistry, videos, and simulations. The Master Course Template is based TOTALLY on Open Recourses (OER). No lab manual is needed. My contributions in the development of such Master Course Template were the lion share among all colleagues. Joju (our trainer) can testify to this statement. Her email is: jcleaver@gsu.edu

f.  I have written handwritten notes for Survey of chemistry 1 and 2 and posted them in my personal websites as well as iCollege.

g. I have written handwritten notes for General (Principals) of chemistry 1 and 2 and posted them in my personal websites as well as iCollege.

h.    We (my colleagues and I) published 4 eBook: 2 Books in survey of chemistry 1 and 2 and 2 eBooks in General (Principals) of Chemistry. These eBooks (OER) are based on ALG (Affordable Learning of Georgia) grants. My share in publishing was the greatest among my colleagues. I published and posted all these eBooks I have written by myself and with my other colleagues as well as handwritten notes and recitations. The students have easier access to the materials in lectures and labs. The websites are cellphones and iPads compatible and easily accessible. As matter of fact, they are using these websites for everyday learning of their classes.

i.   The website of these 4 ebooks:

1.     Survey of Chemistry 1 and 2:

https://gsusurveychemistry.org/

2.     Principal of Chemistry (General Chemistry) 1 and 2:

j.       I developed my iCollege courses with large amount of free simulations, free videos and free worksheets with and without answer keys. My students are enjoying reading and working with these materials posted in the iCollege.

k.     I developed several websites to help my students in their learning and improving their chemistry background.

      My Personal Websites are :

   Google Sites Webpage: https://sites.google.com/site/maheratteyaphd

   GSU Webpage: https://perimeter.gsu.edu/profile/maher-atteya/

   LinkedIn Webpage: https://www.linkedin .com/in/ maher-a tte ya-ph- d-b36681a1

l.       I developed a YouTube Channel for my students. All labs’ recitations are recorded and posted on this channel. The students can go back and review the materials and the experiments procedures. The link my YouTube Channel is given below:

In summer 2020, the department decided to go away from the fully online chemistry lab with the kit and instead couple faculty from the Perimeter College and the Atlanta Campus were charged to develop the Survey of Chemistry 1 Lab fully online and make a universal Master Course Template for this fully online lab based on simulations, videos and kitchen chemistry labs. We have gotten rid of the kit based online lab.

I did contribute in the 13 - week workshop in designing the lab structure and content. Our Trainer Mrs. Joju Cleaver can testify about the time and the effort I put on this 13 - week project. So far, we are piloting it this fall 2020 and we will continue updating and improving it as the time goes by. So far, the students seem to like it much better and we anticipate the DWF % rate will drop tremendously and we will contribute to the best teaching and learning experiences by our students.

The new feature of this fully online lab is the addition of College to Career aspect which will help the students understand better their transition from college after they finish their degree to real life job.

With the development of this fully online lab, I did develop 8 kitchen lab chemistry which I hope the next stage of the development of the Survey of chemistry 1 lab:

Fully Face to Face Lab       ------->  Hybrid Lab (50% On Campus and 50% Online) -------> Fully Online

with Chemistry Kit --------> Fully Online with Simulations and Videos --------->   Fully Online with

Kitchen Chemistry

I am a co-advisor for 2 students clubs: The Chemistry Club and the Science Club. Even with Corona Epidemic, we are still active and lately we carried our Halloween Activity. We carried the activities in our Clarkston Campus while the students followed the Halloween Experiments live via the Webex Meeting Room.
