What does a prep event mean?
This is an engineering open preparation (also known as pre-build) event. It means that you must prepare your device prior to the day of the olympics. There will be no time for you to build at the olympics. The device must be submitted for impound in the morning when you arrive.
Can a school submit multiple devices?
Each school can only submit one device.
Some schools will open this event to all members of their science olympics team and then run an internal competition to choose the best device to represent their school at MSEO.
Team Eligibility
Open to all grades (7 and 8)
There can be up to 3 students working on the device
This event is always during the first timeslot
For the impound only 1 student is required to be present
JACK IN THE BOX
A chilling mission: protect the unexpected Jack, in his Box, from the searing heat that threatens to silence his surprise.
Engineer an insulating box tough enough to keep Jack cool, so that Jack can be primed to pop out at just the right moment.
Screenshot of Jack in the Box event details are below. It can also be accessed here: Jack in the Box - Instructions and Rules for Participants
As schools email us questions, we will post answers here for everyone to read.
Q: How would the "Total time for Jack to melt entirely" be measured?
A: Jack would be checked on at even time intervals.
Q: Can these "store bought" materials be used: styrofoam, packing peanuts, pieces of wood?
A. Individual pieces for materials can be store bought. The entire device cannot be store bought or pre-manufactured. So yes, all those above items can be used.
