Description: NASA needs a new precision-blasting device and you are the team to help design it using only film canisters, water and Alka-Seltzer tablets. You must use your knowledge of rates of reactions to develop a new design that will result in a launch that is closest to the target time of 30 seconds.

Crazy Catapult

Type: Engineering

Participants per team: 4

Description: Do you like medieval role play? How about launching candy across classrooms? In Crazy Catapulting students will design and build their very own original catapult and compete for the farthest launch. Do you have what it takes to be a medieval engineer? Find out at MSEO 2014. Added bonus - you get to eat the candy after the contest.

Fermi

Type: Math

Participants per team: Unlimited students working together, but limited to one response per school per question.


Description: Do you love math? Do you love candy? If you answered yes to both questions you’ll love Fermi! Throughout the day, we will have jars of candy on display where you can use math to estimate the number of candies inside. The school with the closest answer will be able to take the candy home! Be quick though, since the jar will change every 45 minutes! There will also be challenging questions where you must use estimation and logic to answer. Points will be awarded for each of the closest candy jar guess, for correctly answering each challenging question estimation and providing the correct explanations.

Lost

Type: General

Participants per team: 4


Description: Fellow bold and bright explorers, compete for the ultimate treasure in a game of questions, puzzles and riddles. Using your extensive knowledge of all three sciences, conquer the problems presented to you by the tricky treasure guards to earn clues that will bring you closer to your prize. Be careful not to get lost on your way!

Mini Car Jump

Type: Engineering (Prior Prep, 1 entry per school)

Participants per team: 4

Description: Demonstrate design and construction abilities in a challenge to build a self-propelled car that first travels horizontally at ground level, then runs up a ramp, jumps and lands on its wheels at a specified horizontal distance of 1 meter from the end of the ramp at ground level. Most materials are allowed barring certain restrictions outlined in the rules.This event requires advanced preparation. Download the document below for the event details.

Pictorial Essay

Type: Biology (Prior Prep, 1 entry per school)

Description: In this pictorial essay, you will visually present your exploration of the impact of genetically modified organism on the developing world through the use of original art and/or photographs. The pictorial essay can ask a question, make a statement, or illustrate a case-study. Give your work a meaningful title and include a 200-word description of your thesis.
