Lab head (Professor of Molecular Medicine)
Dr Lee Machado BSc, PhD, SFHEA
Lee is professor of Molecular Medicine in the Centre for Physical Activity and Life Sciences and is Faculty Research and Enterprise Lead. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow with the Department of Genetics and Genome Biology at the University of Leicester.
Lee received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Warwick, which included a placement year at Novartis in Vienna. He has a Ph.D. degree in cancer studies from the University of Birmingham and is a Senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
He then did post-doctoral research at the Institute for Cancer Studies in Birmingham, the MRC Toxicology Unit in Leicester, and the Department of Genetics also in Leicester, before working as a Senior Scientist in Nottingham with the cancer vaccine company, Scancell.
He joined the University of Northampton, as a Lecturer, in 2013 and has been interim head of Sport, Exercise and Life Sciences, co-Lead of the Molecular Biosciences Research Group with Professor Karen Anthony and previously co-led the Ageing Research Centre with Prof. Judith Sixsmith at the University.
His research (and that of his team) include employing cellular and molecular approaches to understand the biology of cancer and address how the host immune system responds to infection and tumours.
