Summer Math

A message from Ms. Tarantino, the Waverly Park Math resource teacher:

How do we keep math alive over the summer? Let me count the ways! Math is all around us and we use it everyday. Explore, Discover and most of all, have fun doing it!

· Students will still be able to access their Fastt Math accounts over the summer. Simply go to the Lynbrook web page =>Resources=>Sam Student Access Home

· Practice math facts while driving

· Calculate how many minutes you read everyday. How much is that in a week?

How many hours is that? Set a goal for each week. Record your data on a graph.

· How tall are you? Did you grow over the summer? Make a chart and record your data.

· Calculate miles driven during vacations.

· Look at a map together. Find places to go and learn how to read a coordinate grid.

· Go out to lunch. How much is the tip? The tax? The total?

· Pay attention to the calendar. How many days until…?

· Practice reading a clock

· Buy a treat with real money (no credit card); how much do I need, how much change will I get?

· Go to the supermarket together! Discuss how some items are priced by the pound.

Compare prices and clip coupons!

· Welcome your children into the kitchen! Make measuring and fractions a part of your everyday.

Making a simple dessert of Jell-o can open a discussion about the water cycle, solids and liquids,

and measuring.

· Explore capacity; it’s right in your refrigerator. Learn about gallons, quarts, and pints.

· Go to the bank together! Bring home some deposit slips and practice adding money.

Review basic vocabulary; deposit, withdraw, interest etc.

· Look at the weather map in the newspaper. Compare temperatures to other parts of the world.

Make up word problems that explore how much hotter, or list temperatures from least to greatest.

· Play board games!

· Visit the Math Lab website for fun games and to practice skills.

· Visit www.xtramath.org and practice math facts for speed and efficiency
