PARP 2017

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Pick A Reading Partner, formerly Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) is a New York State PTA program intended to nurture a love of reading within our students through support from family, friends and the community. This year’s theme will be “Owl You Need Is Kindness & A Good Book.” The official kick-off rally will be on Friday, January 20, 2017 with exciting activities planned for the week of January 23rd through January 27th.

This year, each student will receive a blank notebook that they will use as a journal and to hold in-class assignments for the week. Students will record “acts of kindness” in their book and will do their assigned reading and log as per teacher instructions.

PARP should be a fun family experience. As a reading partner you can choose what types of reading materials you share together. For example, you both can read an article in a newspaper, a magazine, plays, poetry, recipes and of course, books!

In school, teachers will be working on a variety of special classroom activities during the week. These activities will be appropriate for your child’s grade level. The home assignments have been created to be fun, keep with our theme and provide fun ways to work together to share in a love of literacy.

We are asking, in keeping with our “Owl You Need Is Kindness & A Good Book” theme, for each student to bring in new or very gently used books to be donated through our partnership with The Book Fairies. The donated books are to be brought in by Friday, January 27th and placed in collection boxes provided in the lobby. The Book Fairies is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that collects reading materials for people in need throughout metropolitan New York. The reading materials foster literacy and academic success, provide a respite from personal struggles, and nurture a love of reading across age groups.

Finally, we are proud to be partnering with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island again. In the last 3 years, our students have raised well over $4,000 by reading and we hope to continue the tradition. A letter about the program and the donation sheet is included in this packet.

Thank you for your support!
