The Heartland Circuit of the Lutheran Women's Missionary Society (LWMS) had its start in early 1980. A group of women from congregations in the southwest section of Ohio belonging to the LWMS Ohio Circuit began considering forming a new circuit as more mission churches were added to their section of the state. They felt that forming a new circuit would foster more interest in the mission endeavors of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS).
On Saturday, March 8, 1980, the first meeting to organize a circuit for the southwest area of Ohio was held at the home of Shirley Miller. After another meeting on March 22, the first spring rally was held on April 26, 1980. On that day, 42 women and pastors joined together to form the 45th circuit of the LWMS. They adopted a constitution, elected their first officers, and named their circuit the Buckeye Circuit.
Today that small number of women has grown into a group that includes women from 14 WELS congregations in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. In 1999 the name of the circuit was changed to the Heartland Circuit to better reflect the geographic change that had taken place.
The Lord has blessed the work of the circuit over the years as women have joined hearts and hands to promote and support the mission endeavors of the WELS through LWMS. We look forward to many more as we continue to serve Jesus and share his saving message with those around the world, near and far!
