Detail on Equatorial Guinea
Not to be confused with Guinea, New Guinea, or Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea is a Massachusetts-sized Spanish-speaking country in the heart of the Congo Basin in West Africa. Can you see that little maroon rectangle between Cameroon and Gabon? That's it!
But why are we so interested in this place? Because the jungle wildlife there is absolutely spectacular, and poorly known by scientists. It's one of the few places on earth that you could still see an African Elephant run out of the jungle to take a bath in the ocean. On the other hand, because of recently-discovered offshore oil reserves, Equatorial Guinea has become the richest country in Africa by GDP - richer than South Korea, Russia and Brazil, which resulted in a massive wave of development of virgin rainforest - the home of Gorillas, Chimpanzees, and many, many spectacular birds. The birdlife in Equatorial Guinea is particularly poorly known; though the country's list of bird species stands close to 400, we estimate that the real number may be hundreds larger.
