Welcome to my web site.

I am a historian of science at the Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da Tecnologia, in the Faculty of Sciences  of  the University of Lisbon, where I am also affiliated with the History and Philosophy of Science Department. I moreover teach in the Master and Doctoral Programs in the History and Philosophy of Science.

My main research interests are the history of astronomy in Portugal and Spain, Jesuit science, Iberian archaeoastronomy and the material culture of science.

In addition, I am a Contributing Editor to ISIS Current Bibliography: one of the most important bibliographies in the history of science and related fields, and in the period 2020-2023 I was a HoST - Journal of History of Science and Technology Executive Editor.

Here you will find information on my research projects, my papers, books and other topics.

If you want to know more about my academic activities please peruse the following pages.

I have been, since March 2018, one of the organizers of CIUHCT's Permanent Seminar on Ancient Astronomy. This seminar was in the meantime renamed as the Helena Avelar Seminar on Ancient Astronomy and Astrology [in memory of Helena Avelar de Carvalho (1964-2021)].
