Over the years of gradual clearing, the area around and adjacent to our home has become 'edge habitat' for many small creatures including mice, voles, squirrels, birds, hares and foxes. We also reside in a wildlife corridor for caribou, moose and bears, so on occasion these species will travel through the yard. There is one cow moose that has resided in and around this area for years and she has become quite comfortable around humans, pillaging the compost piles and garden refuse of my rural neighbors and raiding my hay sheds when I was feeding alfalfa. Since I have switched to local grass hay, she seems to have lost interest in it, as moose are predominantly browsers, not grazers.
