To achieve honesty within yourself
To recognize who and what you are
Do this and you can be honest with others. To be honest to ourselves, to live in the spirit of how they were created, never to lie or gossip about one another.
Gwiinawiinendam (humility) - Not know what to think
Humble yourself and recognize that no matter how much you think you know, you know very little of all the universe.
Always act in humility
One was to think about their family, their fellow man, and their community before they thought of themselves.
Debwe (truth) - Tell the truth
To learn truth, to live with truth, and to walk with truth and speak the truth
Always seek the truth, it lies in spirit.
Prayer is to be done every day at sunrise to give thanksgiving to the Great Spirit for the gift of life.
Nibwaakaa (wisdom) - be wise
To have wisdom is to know the difference between good and bad, and to know the results of your actions.
To live in wisdom is knowing the gifts the Creator gave to everyone
Use these gifts to build a family and community filled with caring, sharing, kindness, respect, and love for one another.
Zaagi (love) - love
Unconditional love to know that when people are weak, they need your love the most
To give your love freely, without conditions or love is not true
The Anishinaabeg were to always act in love to love the Creator the same way he loved his people, because it was the love of the Creator that gave life.
Minwaabamewizi (respect) - Be respected
Respect others and their beliefs
Respect yourself
If you cannot show respect, you cannot expect respect to be given. To respect all life in Mother Earth, to show real respect was to give of yourself for all the benefits of all life.
Mangide'e (courage) - be courageous
To be brave is to do something right, even if you know it's going to hurt you
To have courage to always do that which was morally right
Be proud of being Anishinaabe and never to deny the way of life the Creator gave to us.
