LONGWOOD HS PTSA VIRTUAL MEETING MINUTES

JANUARY 3, 2024

ATTENDEES: Kyle, Nicole, Penni, Kirsten, June, Edith, Ms Desronvil, Jen, Maria, Angela, David and Mr Sosa plus 3 others

MEETING CALLED TO ORDER: 7:05

Administrative's Report - Ruth Desronvil began the meeting by highlighting the many positive things that occurred on December 22, 2023 at Longwood High School. Everyone enjoyed the Band, Choir and Orchestra students who began to play with their talents at 6:30 am. Ms. Desronvil suggested that next year, parents & guardians should come in and witness the singing that takes place.

Hack-a-thon offers other schools to join us where students learn to code and compete with the coding program and a competition. Amazon, Google and the media stopped by with Mr. Beecher and Mr. Hirdt.

A previous Longwood graduate soldier surprised his sister by visiting her class. This story made the front cover of News12 and Newsday. The family was very excited and happy about the visit.

Screens are working at Longwood High School in the cafe's, hallways and the North Entrance. The idea is to promote the great things happening in order to get students involved.

UTube channel- Student engagement to present "Restorative Practice" to use as a vehicle with Ms Cronin, English Department Chair. What does it mean to be punctual? Who knows, someone might become a Journalist?

Regents and midterms are coming up on January 23-26, 2024. During the holiday time, Best Buddies met in The Commons Area where they brought their friends and joined in the Christmas Celebration.

Gingerbread Houses were decorated beautifully and our very own PTSA President, Kim Anderson, visited her daughter's class to see them.

Ms. Desronvil oversees the Seal of Biliteracy program and has grown to over 200 students. The Heritage Club is spearheaded by Mr. Rodriguez and Mr. Gonzalez-Bonilla; there is a new program to help students translate to English courses. The students go to the Library to read and motivate students to come to school.

LOTE Department Chairperson - Emilio Sosa spoke about the SLA Program. The SLA (Spanish Language Arts) program has started this school year in the World Language Program at the High School. Currently, only SLA 1 is offered but over the next three school years a new level of SLA will be introduced until the program is completely implemented (SLA 1, 2, 3 and 4). These courses do not replace our Heritage course at the High School as SLA is designed to support the needs of Spanish speaking ENL students.

The purpose behind the course is to support students in developing their academic skills in their primary language of Spanish to then transfer them to the English language. The goal is for our department to help support academic success of our Spanish speaking ELLs in all their courses at Longwood High School. It has been great to see students improve their academic capacity in Spanish and witness them make another connection with our school community through this course.

Mr. Sosa shared that the World Language Department has two new teachers: Mr. James Hopkins for Italian and Ms. Josmary Vergara for Spanish.

StonyBrook ACE program course is $300 where students can communicate and use in real life settings. Parents and students should contact the College Admissions office directly to confirm the program transfer credit acceptance. Beginning next week, Seal of Biliteracy students will prepare for February and March presentations. In the World Language Department website, a chart is displayed to help students accrue points.

President's Report - Kim Anderson - On the first or second week in April 2024, the LHS PTSA Executive Board wants to book a Parent Event.  We are also trying for a Bowling Event as well.
