ARTIST STATEMENT
Being an artist is being HONEST.
To be HONEST to who I am, what I see, how I feel for this world.
The never ending pursuit of identity.
A place where I am running from and to simultaneously.
Art is personal again.
BIOGRAPHY
CHANG Hoong Yang was born in 1972 in Raub, Malaysia. He is ethnic Chinese as his grandparents fled China during the tumultuous 1920s. Born left-handed with creative leaning, he is a self-thought artist. Growing up, he was asked to conform to the family’s pragmatism and society’s expectations. This did not stop him from experimenting with various forms of art including painting and music.
He moved to America in Christmas 1992 and spent two years in Holy Family College in Philadelphia while pursuing his love of art. He received a recommendation from the sisters of Holy Family College with discussion of art scholarship in order to persuade him to stay and major in art. Torn between honesty to his art and family obligations, he ultimately choose to complete his education in La Salle University and graduated with business management instead. Holy Family College Dean collected a work titled "Oedipus Rex".
Nevertheless, he continued to experiment. Yang’s art is not limited by form but is being expressed through paintings, photography, web-sites, music composition and performing. He pursued these art forms with passion but has lately focused more on paintings with renewed vigor. In 2007, Yang was strolling the corner of 25th Street Manhattan where he found a stray Rocky movie poster. In his words “I realized that it is not HONEST enough, I don’t feel the poster is HONEST, so I brought it home and started spraying and vandalizing the poster. After I was done, I felt better already.”
In 2008, Yang held his first solo exhibition at Gershwin hotel. With Golden Boy as the principal piece, is born out of anger and effused with raw emotion. These series of contemporary work is created from a fusion of his Chinese ethnicity and American street credo. He reinterpreted nostalgic images into brutal reality by using a mixture of modern medium such as spray paints and markers. "911" is collected by Gershwin hotel.
Currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.
