A VALENTINE SONNET FOR MY WIFE LAURA

A rosy garland crowning my heart’s Queen -

A goblet filled to brim with rubied wine -

A clarion proclamation – Music’s sign -

These Valentines rejoice with passion keen.

Once more, my love, this day has come to pass,

Once more a time to celebrate anew,

Once more a chance for toasting, just we two,

With song, with picnicked feast, with crystal glass.

It’s right that with each quickly passing year,

It’s fine that with each celebration fleet,

It’s good that with each twinge of life’s retreat,

Still love finds laughter during each brief tear.

So dear belov’d, my wish for you is this:

That each new year come welcome as a kiss.
