1. Meet Your Librarian – Stand-Alone Session (5 min.)

Is your syllabus too crammed to accommodate a library instruction session? An NEIU librarian can visit your class, introduce herself, and distribute contact information and library literature.

2. Introduction to the NEIU Library (15 min.)

In this overview of library resources and services, students gain basic information about databases, journals, books, interlibrary loan, and ways of accessing librarian assistance.

3. Searching the NEIU Catalog (20 min.)*

Students learn how to conduct basic searches in the NEIU Library Catalog and retrieve books from the shelves.

* Available Add-On: Introduction to I-Share Interlibrary Loan for Books and Multimedia (10 min.)

* May be substituted for an introduction to the new catalog, One Stop, which searches WorldCat Local

4. Introduction to Database Searching (30 min.)*

Students will learn to conduct basic searches in the Library’s single largest database, Academic Search Complete, and retrieve NEIU holdings in full text.

* Available Add-On: Introduction to WorldShare Interlibrary Loan for Articles (10 min.)

* Available Add-On: Tracking Citations AKA Known-Item Searching (10 min.)

5. Advanced Search Techniques (30 min.)

Learn to search like a librarian! This session covers Boolean searching, subjects versus keywords, advanced searches, and other closely held librarian “tricks of the trade.” For best results, this session should be scheduled after students have determined their research questions and paired with a 15-minute long workshop.

6. Exploring Specialized Databases (30 min.)

Let NEIU librarians guide your students through specialized databases hand-selected to support your assignment. NEIU librarians can also create an original web page for students’ reference.

7. Distinguishing Popular and Scholarly Periodicals (30 min.)

By drawing comparisons between print journals and magazines, students will learn the differences between scholarly and popular publications.

8. Creating a Website with Google Sites (50 min.)

Using Google Sites, students can create and publish their own original web designs. No knowledge of HTML is required!

9. Open Workshop (15 min.+)

Librarians can reserve the library’s smart classroom and assist students as they conduct their research.
