The First United Church of Christ is located at the corner of North Main and Harrison Streets. Our church was originally the German Reformed, following John Calvin's doctrines as opposed to those of the Lutherans under Martin Luther's ideas. Both German groups first settled in Pennsylvania before traveling to Lewisburg where they worshiped in the same log sanctuary--one built in 1808 and a second in 1817, located on the spot where Roselawn Cemetery is now. This arrangement continued into the 1840s

From 1816-1819, the Lewisburg and West Alexandria congregations were a single charge, served by traveling ministers until divided by the Synod in 1939.

The original church was built in 1855 and remodeled in 1908, according to inscriptions on the cornerstone.

In 1934, our denomination merged with the Evangelical Synod and became the Evangelical and Reformed Church. During the twenty years from 1928 to 1949, many industrious and enthusiastic student ministers from Bonebrake Seminary served the church.

From 1949 to 1957, two retired ministers guided the church and were instrumental in urging that more space was needed for future growth. The Parish Hall was completed in 1958. Much of the labor was performed by members under the supervision of an experienced builder.

In 1957, the Evangelical and Reformed Church was united with the Congressional Christian Church to become the First United Church of Christ. As a result of the merger, people of various denominational backgrounds find it comfortable to become members and to participate in the various worship services for all ages.

The parsonage was completed in 1970 and, again much of the work was done by members. Improvements and renovations are completed when necessary.

Our church is a growing, friendly church and can be called a family church.

You can find the actual story and much more in the Preble County Ohio book which can be found in pastor Dave's office (pg. 98 & 99)
