Jean-Luc Mongrain et moi étions des amis, mais Jean-Luc avait beaucoup d'amis. Je n'étais qu'un parmi tous les autres!
Nous avons cependant eu trois liens directs dans nos deux vies: il avait été mon voisin de condo lorsqu'il habitait le Vieux-Montréal; nous avions eu les mêmes inspirations religieuses durant notre jeunesse, lui ayant étudié pour devenir curé et moi ayant grandi dans le presbytère de mon village, où ma tante était la ménagère du curé; et c'est moi qui lui avait téléphoné pour savoir s'il accepterait d'aller luncher avec Pierre Péladeau pour joindre à titre de dirigeant le réseau télé TQS que Quebecor avait acheter en août 1997. Pierre Péladeau avait connu Jean-Luc à cause de ses deux hebdos à Sherbrooke. Les deux sont devenus amis à partir de cette époque, même si Jean-Luc avait vendu les hebdos à Paul Desmarais… Le groupe de fondateurs, incluant Jean-Luc Mongrain, a vendu l'hebdomadaire La Nouvelle de Sherbrooke en 1986. L'acheteur était le Groupe Trans-Canada, une filiale de Power Corporation (propriété de la famille Desmarais). Le journal avait été cofondé en 1982. Quatre ans plus tard, sa vente à Power Corporation a permis de l'intégrer au même giron que le grand quotidien sherbrookois La Tribune, tandis que Jean-Luc Mongrain a délaissé la gestion écrite pour faire le saut définitif vers sa prolifique carrière à la télévision.
Jean-Luc et moi avions aussi une passion commune, celle des chevaux. Il adorait se promener dans sa grange avec ses chevaux.
Jean-Luc maîtrisait particulièrement bien le truc des curés pour communiquer... Il aimait le spectacle!
On pouvait d'ailleurs reconnaître dans son style d'animation le côté « preacher » convaincant et enflammé…
Jean-Luc Mongrain a été un grand personnage, un artiste, qui a marqué le Québec.
Son départ laisse un très grand vide, surtout pour ceux qui l'ont connu ou côtoyé, mais comme il le dirait lui-même : "la vie continue…" Au final, c'est un arbre qui est tombé dans la forêt...

Jean-Luc Mongrain and I were friends, but Jean-Luc had many friends. I was just one among many!
However, there were three direct connections between our lives: he had been my condo neighbor when he lived in Old Montreal; we had shared the same religious influences during our youth—he had studied to become a priest, and I had grown up in my village’s rectory, where my aunt was the priest’s housekeeper; and I was the one who called him to ask if he’d be willing to have lunch with Pierre Péladeau to join, as an executive, the TQS television network that Quebecor had purchased in August 1997. Pierre Péladeau had met Jean-Luc through his two weekly newspapers in Sherbrooke. The two became friends from that time on, even though Jean-Luc had sold the weeklies to Paul Desmarais… The group of founders, including Jean-Luc Mongrain, sold the weekly La Nouvelle de Sherbrooke in 1986. The buyer was Groupe Trans-Canada, a subsidiary of Power Corporation (owned by the Desmarais family). The newspaper had been co-founded in 1982. Four years later, its sale to Power Corporation allowed it to be integrated into the same group as Sherbrooke’s major daily, *La Tribune*, while Jean-Luc Mongrain stepped away from editorial management to make the definitive leap into his prolific television career.
Jean-Luc and I also shared a passion for horses. He loved spending time in his barn with his horses.
Jean-Luc was particularly skilled at that “preacher’s touch” when it came to communicating… He loved putting on a show!
In fact, his hosting style clearly reflected that convincing and impassioned “preacher” quality…
Jean-Luc Mongrain was a larger-than-life figure, an artist who left his mark on Quebec.
His passing leaves a huge void, especially for those who knew him or spent time with him, but as he himself would say: “Life goes on…” In the end, it’s just a tree that fell in the forest…

La fête de l’Action de grâce au Québec est un congé officiel célébré annuellement le deuxième lundi d’octobre (12 OCTOBRE 2026), mais elle y revêt une importance plus discrète et un caractère moins commercial qu'ailleurs en Amérique du Nord à cause des origines anglaises de la fête…
Au Canada, l'événement a pris naissance en Nouvelle-Écosse en 1578, pour remercier Dieu du succès des expéditions de l’explorateur anglais Martin Frobisher.
Aux États-Unis, la fête se célèbre plus tard, le quatrième jeudi de novembre, alors que le Thanksgiving américain commémore la survie des Pères pèlerins du Mayflower en 1621 à Plymouth. Fondée par les pèlerins du Mayflower (les "Pilgrims"), Plymouth, située à environ 60 km au sud de Boston, est l'une des plus anciennes municipalités des États-Unis.

Thanksgiving Day in Quebec is an official holiday celebrated annually on the second Monday in October (OCTOBER 12, 2026), but it has a more low-key significance and is less commercial in nature there than elsewhere in North America because of the holiday’s English origins…
In Canada, the holiday originated in Nova Scotia in 1578 to give thanks to God for the success of the expeditions led by the English explorer Martin Frobisher.
In the United States, the holiday is celebrated later, on the fourth Thursday of November, while American Thanksgiving commemorates the survival of the Pilgrim Fathers of the Mayflower in 1621 in Plymouth. Founded by the Mayflower settlers (the “Pilgrims”), Plymouth, situated 60 km south of Boston, is one of the oldest municipalities in the United States.

"Elon Musk appuie la séparation du Québec!"
La déclaration a attiré l'attention de tout le Canada.
On peut conclure qu'il deviendra plus difficile de réunir les amis Mark et Elon dans un même chalet pour un week-end, à moins de les recevoir dans deux pièces séparées…
Elon Musk possède l'art et les moyens d'attirer l'attention.
Personnellement, je trouve sympa le clin d'œil d'Elon envers le Québec, mais je ne crois pas que Mark Carney doive s'inquiéter, car le Parti québécois est minoritaire, ce qui rend pratiquement impossible la tenue d'un référendum dans le mandat actuel.
Par ailleurs, il est intéressant de savoir qu'Elon est citoyen canadien, de par sa mère née en Saskatchewan, et il a vécu au Canada entre l'âge de 17 et 21 ans.
Lorsqu’Elon Musk, alors âgé de 17 ans, est arrivé au Canada en provenance d’Afrique du Sud en juin 1989 (en partie pour échapper au service militaire obligatoire sous le régime de l’apartheid), il a atterri à Montréal (Dorval) dans l’intention de séjourner chez un grand-oncle. Cependant, lorsqu’il s’est rendu à une cabine téléphonique pour essayer de le joindre, il a découvert que son oncle avait déjà déménagé dans le Minnesota. Il s'est donc retrouvé dans une auberge de jeunesse comme solution de secours temporaire et il a passé quelques jours à explorer Montréal. Il a ensuite acheté un billet d’autobus transcanadien en direction de l’ouest, vers la Saskatchewan, car il avait retrouvé d’autres parents éloignés (des cousins au deuxième degré) vivant là-bas. Ce trajet en bus à travers le Canada l’a conduit dans une ferme à Waldeck, en Saskatchewan, où il a passé ses premiers mois au Canada à effectuer des travaux manuels épuisants — vider des silos à céréales, s’occuper des potagers et couper des bûches — avant de s’inscrire à l’université Queen’s, en Ontario.
Il s'installe en Ontario en 1990 pour commencer ses études universitaires à Queen's University (à Kingston) et il étudie pendant environ deux ans à Queen's University. Il quitte le Canada en 1992 pour les États-Unis après avoir obtenu une bourse pour intégrer l'Université de Pennsylvanie, où il poursuivra sa formation en physique et en économie.
En 1995, son frère Kimbal le rejoint et ensemble ils démarrent leur première entreprise, Zip2 (fondée à l'origine sous le nom de Global Link Information Network). Un précurseur de Google Maps. C'est ce tout premier coup d'essai entrepreneurial qui leur a rapporté gros lorsque l'entreprise a été rachetée par Compaq en 1999 pour près de 300 millions de dollars, ce qui a fourni à Elon le capital de départ pour lancer ses projets suivants (comme X.com, qui est devenu PayPal) puis, plus tard, Tesla et SpaceX. Une véritable histoire de start-up née dans un garage !
Au final, en ce qui me concerne, j'ai un point en commun avec Elon Musk et j’en suis très fier…
Nous sommes tous les deux nés un 28 juin…

“Elon Musk supports Quebec's secession!” The statement caught the attention of all of Canada.
We can conclude that it will become more difficult to get friends Mark and Elon together at the same cottage for a weekend, unless they’re hosted in two separate rooms…
Elon Musk has a talent—and the means—to attract attention.
Personally, I think Elon’s nod to Quebec is nice, but I don’t think Mark Carney needs to worry, because the Parti Québécois is in the minority, making it virtually impossible to hold a referendum during this current term.
Incidentally, it’s interesting to note that Elon is a Canadian citizen—his mother was born in Saskatchewan—and he lived in Canada from the ages of 17 to 21.
When Elon Musk, then 17 years old, arrived in Canada from South Africa in June 1989 (in part to avoid compulsory military service under the apartheid regime), he landed in Montreal (Dorval) intending to stay with a great-uncle. However, when he went to a payphone to try to reach him, he discovered that his uncle had already moved to Minnesota. He therefore ended up at a youth hostel as a temporary fallback and spent a few days exploring Montreal. He then bought a trans-Canadian bus ticket heading west toward Saskatchewan, as he had found other distant relatives (second cousins) living there. That cross-Canada bus trip took him to a farm in Waldeck, Saskatchewan, where he spent his first few months in Canada doing grueling manual labor—emptying grain silos, tending vegetable gardens, and chopping firewood—before enrolling at Queen’s University in Ontario. He moved to Ontario in 1990 to begin his university studies at Queen’s University (in Kingston), and he studied at Queen’s University for about two years. He left Canada in 1992 for the United States after receiving a scholarship to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he continued his studies in physics and economics.
In 1995, his brother Kimbal joined him, and together they launched their first company, Zip2 (originally founded as Global Link Information Network). A precursor to Google Maps. It was this very first entrepreneurial venture that paid off big when the company was acquired by Compaq in 1999 for nearly $300 million, which provided Elon with the seed capital to launch his subsequent projects (such as X.com, which became PayPal) and, later, Tesla and SpaceX. A true “garage startup” story!
All in all, as far as I’m concerned, I have one thing in common with Elon Musk, and I’m very proud of it… We were both born on June 28…

One of my greatest passions is American TV series, and my absolute favorite is NCIS: Origins.
The series is now in its third season, which premiered Tuesday, October 6, on CBS.
Fans were treated to Gibbs’ return in a leading role.
Mark Harmon is returning full-time as Old Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS: Origins season 3.
The serie is on every Tuesday at 10 pm on CBS and Global in Canada.
This is by far the best TV series of the new fall season 2026.

UNE PASSION POUR LA TÉLÉVISION -

L’une de mes plus grandes passions, ce sont les séries télévisées américaines, et ma préférée, sans conteste, est « NCIS : Origins ».
La série en est désormais à sa troisième saison, dont la première a eu lieu mardi 6 octobre sur CBS.
Les fans ont eu le plaisir de voir le retour de Gibbs dans un rôle principal.
Mark Harmon reprend à plein temps le rôle du vieux Leroy Jethro Gibbs dans la saison 3 de NCIS : Origins.
La série est diffusée tous les mardis à 22 h sur CBS et Global au Canada.
C’est de loin la meilleure série télévisée de la nouvelle saison d’automne 2026.

LA VICTOIRE ET LA DÉFAITE…

Mon ami Mark Carney a gagné son pari…
Il n'a plus peur du Parti québécois et il a même chaleureusement félicité son chef pour sa victoire.
Le Québec a bien sûr élu un gouvernement du Parti québécois, mais minoritaire. Il devient donc évident que Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon ne pourra pas mener unilatéralement son projet de référendum.
Mais même si le PQ n'a pas de majorité absolue avec 59 députés, il l'obtient s'il fait des alliances, notamment avec Québec solidaire, qui, avec ses 9 députés, donne une majorité par association de 68 députés.
Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon a cependant reconnu dans son discours d'acceptation qu'il est minoritaire, qu'il entend collaborer avec les trois autres partis, et il a même ajouté le nom de Mark Carney à Ottawa, avec qui il entend travailler sur des projets communs…
Le grand perdant est la CAQ, une défaite totale et historique!
Moi, j'ai perdu mon vote local, mais comme je le dis toujours: « la vie continue »…

My friend Mark Carney won his bet…
He is no longer afraid of the Parti Québécois, and he even warmly congratulated its leader on his victory.
Quebec has, of course, elected a Parti Québécois government—but it is a minority government. It is therefore becoming clear that Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon will not be able to unilaterally push through his referendum plan.
But even though the PQ does not have an absolute majority with its 59 members of the National Assembly, it can secure one by forming coalitions, notably with Québec solidaire, which, with its 9 members, provides a majority by association of 68 members.
Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon did, however, acknowledge in his acceptance speech that he is in a minority and intends to collaborate with the three other parties; he even mentioned Mark Carney in Ottawa, with whom he plans to work on joint projects…
The big loser is the CAQ—a total and historic defeat!
As for me, I lost my local election, but as I always say: “Life goes on”…
Looking forward to fall 2026!

SOIRÉE D'ÉLECTIONS - QUÉBEC 2026...

Pour moi, une soirée d'élections est comme un match sportif que l'on regarde entre amis sur l’écran télé.
Qui gagnera! Voilà toute l'excitation et le plaisir de la soirée à vivre dans l'attente que notre équipe favorite gagne!
Personnellement, mon candidat préféré était Pablo Rodriguez, mais il a été victime d'un violent putsch qui s'est déroulé entre le 17 novembre 2025 et sa démission forcée le 17 décembre. Je suis encore triste du traitement que l'on fait vivre à Pablo et compte tenu de ce comportement barbare du Parti libéral du Québec, je ne pouvais pas voter pour ce parti…
J'ai donc analysé les 4 autres chefs de parti en lice et, bien que je sois en désaccord avec la vision politique du Parti québécois, j'ai choisi Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon, qui me semble être la meilleure personne pour agir en tant que Premier ministre du Québec. Je ne suis pas inquiet d'un éventuel référendum, pour lequel je voterais contre.
Voter pour l'équipe de Plamondon peut sembler illogique compte tenu de mon admiration profonde pour Mark Carney! Mais selon moi, Plamondon est le meilleur homme pour gérer le Québec et je ne suis pas à une contradiction près... J'ai une personnalité avec plusieurs facettes!
Pour ajouter du plaisir à la soirée, j’ai fait la prédiction devant mes amis de 85 députés péquistes…
Quoi qu'il en soit, puisqu'une soirée électorale est comme une rencontre sportive, et même si Paul est le grand favori pour remporter le trophée, attendons de voir le match et on saura demain, 6 octobre, qui aura gagné.

ELECTION NIGHT - QUEBEC 2026...

To me, election night is like watching a sports game with friends on TV.
Who will win! That’s the whole excitement and fun of the evening—waiting for our favorite team to win!
Personally, my favorite candidate was Pablo Rodriguez, but he fell victim to a violent coup that took place between November 17, 2025, and his forced resignation on December 17. I’m still saddened by the way Pablo was treated, and given this barbaric behavior by the Quebec Liberal Party, I couldn’t bring myself to vote for that party…
So I analyzed the four other party leaders in the running, and although I disagree with the Parti Québécois’ political vision, I chose Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon, who seems to me to be the best person to serve as Premier of Quebec. I’m not worried about a possible referendum, which I would vote against.
Voting for Plamondon’s team may seem illogical given my deep admiration for Mark Carney! But in my opinion, Plamondon is the best man to lead Quebec, and I’m no stranger to contradictions… I have a multifaceted personality!
To add some fun to the evening, I predicted in front of my friends that there would be 85 PQ members at the National Assembly…
In any case, since election night is like a sports game—and even though Paul is the clear favorite to win the trophy—let’s wait and see how the game plays out. We’ll find out tomorrow, October 6, who comes out on top.

LE POUVOIR DE LA POLITIQUE-

À quelques semaines des élections provinciales au Québec, une question se pose! Qu'est-ce qui attire les candidats à faire de la politique? Un travail peu rémunéré et très exigeant en matière de disponibilité, et la loyauté n'existe aucunement!
Personnellement, j'ai connu le monde de la politique avec Brian Mulroney en 1984, mais j'ai aussi connu le monde des affaires et de la finance avec Quebecor et Pierre Péladeau en 1991. J'ai rapidement compris que le pouvoir politique est une illusion et que le vrai pouvoir est financier.
Avec Brian, lorsque nous marchions dans la rue, tout le monde le considérait comme son employé…
Devant Pierre Péladeau, les gens le considéraient comme une sorte de dieu et ils croyaient que la chance de lui avoir parlé leur apporterait la richesse… ( une croyance chinoise selon laquelle toucher de l’or rend riche).
Pierre Péladeau n'a jamais voulu faire de politique, et il me disait souvent que le vrai pouvoir réside dans la finance.
Il y a plusieurs raisons pour lesquelles les gens font de la politique, dont la recherche de la gloire. Une sorte d'illusion face à la réalité de la vie. Pour être heureux en politique, selon moi, il faut être financièrement indépendant avant de commencer et vouloir essayer un autre défi pour le plaisir de vérifier notre talent et non la nécessité d’un emploi.
Mark Carney est un exemple. Il a eu une carrière au sommet de son métier et il est indépendant financièrement. Pour lui, la politique est comme une activité de retraite active après une vie dans la finance. Il s'amuse et il quittera lorsqu'il n'aura plus de plaisir.
Malheureusement, en ce qui concerne l’élection québécoise de 2026, aucun des chefs de parti n’affiche ni l’indépendance de fortune ni une carrière antérieure au sommet. Mais il est incontournable qu’il nous faut choisir un premier ministre et ce sont les seules offres sur le bulletin de vote…

With the Quebec provincial elections just a few weeks away, a question arises: What draws candidates to politics? It’s a job that pays little and demands a great deal of time, and there’s no such thing as loyalty.
Personally, I was introduced to the world of politics through Brian Mulroney in 1984, but I also experienced the world of business and finance through Quebecor and Pierre Péladeau in 1991.
I quickly realized that political power is an illusion and that true power lies in finance.
With Brian, whenever we walked down the street, everyone treated him as if he were their employee…
When Pierre Péladeau was around, people viewed him as a kind of god and believed that the chance to speak with him would bring them wealth… (a Chinese belief that touching gold makes one rich).
Pierre Péladeau never wanted to go into politics, and he often told me that true power lies in finance.
There are many reasons why people go into politics, including a quest for glory—a sort of illusion in the face of life’s realities. To be happy in politics, in my opinion, you have to be financially independent before you start and want to take on a new challenge for the pleasure of testing your talent, not out of the need for a job.
Mark Carney is an example. He had a career at the top of his field and is financially independent. For him, politics is like an active retirement pursuit after a lifetime in finance. He’s enjoying himself and will leave when he no longer finds it fun.
