Congratulation to Sonivette Colón-Rodríguez for receiving the Northeastern Association of Forensic Scientist Carol De Forest Student Research Grant. This award provides funding to forensic science students with financial assistance to conduct research. The grant will support her research in the identification of complex biological stains using Raman spectroscopy and her attendance at the NEAFS 2023 conference.

Last month Dr. Lednev was promoted to Distinguished Professor, the highest academic rank in the State University of New York, conferred solely by the SUNY Board of Trustees. Dr. Igor Lednev, the co-founder of a startup company SupreMEtric LLC, received an NSF STTR grant to commercialize a patented universal method for the identification of body fluid stains for forensic purposes.

This past May (2020) we said "See You Later" to our visiting international student Averil Prima Rashid from Sweden! Although circumstances prevented us from saying good-bye in person, we still made sure he had something to remember us by! We wish him the best of luck with his studies!

The Lednev lab took Chicago, Illinois by storm at Pittcon 2020! The wonderful ladies Nicole, Ewelina, Samantha, Ashley, Anna, and Jalissa presented their research throughout the conference. With a combination of seven presentations, one oral and six poster presentations, these ladies showed the versatility of vibrational spectroscopy for both medical diagnostics and forensic analysis! Dr. Lednev also gave a interview to SelectScience!
Ewelina and Anna proudly represented the Lednev lab at the 72nd American Academy of Forensic Sciences Annual Scientific Meeting in Anaheim, California. Ewelina presented both an oral presentation and a poster presentation on body fluid analysis utilizing vibrational spectroscopy.
Ewelina Mistek continues to capture international attention! Robert Gordon University in Scotland, Ewelina's alma mater, has remained interested in her successes after her graduation.

This December we said goodbye to Sohee Park, a Ph.D. student from Professor Dong Soo Hwang's Laboratory at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), South Korea. We wish her good luck with her studies!
Ewelina, Nicole, and Shelby all went to the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) SciX 2019 Conference in Palm Springs, California! All three presented both a poster and did an oral presentation. Additionally, Ewelina won the 2019 FACSS Student Award! Nicole won the 2019 Coblentz Student Award! And Shelby won the 2019 Best Forensic Oral Presentation Award! Congratulations to our wonderful scientists!

Dr. Igor Lednev has started a new company called "SupreMEtric"! In collaboration with the New York State Police, Dr. Lednev is working to create novel technologies for law enforcement agencies to analyze forensic samples. Their first piece of technology is the creation of "The Forensic Science Incubator," a patented handheld scanner.
Ewelina Mistek has been received the position of Student Representative of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy! She is also working on forming the New York Region Student Chapter of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy!

The Lednev Lab goes international! Ewelina Mistek presented poster at The International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy (ICORS) in August 2018. She also presented a poster at The International Conference on Advanced Vibrational Spectroscopy (ICAVS) in July 2019, where she won an award for Best Student Poster. Ewelina's poster was titled "Sex and race determination based on attenuated total reflection Fourier transform-infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy of a bloodstain."

Lab Members Ewelina Mistek, Shelby Khandasammy and Marisia Fikiet were all able to attend SciX 2018 in Atlanta GA this year. All three were able to give oral presentations, while Ewelina and Marisia also gave poster presentations. Marisia was awarded two awards for her poster; The Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies Gold Poster Award and the Society for Applied Spectroscopy Poster Award for Outstanding Spectroscopic Research by a Student Member. Marisia's awards were highlighted on the University at Albany website.

The lab had a great showing at Pittcon this year in Orlando FL, with three invited talks, two by Dr. Lednev and one by Tatiana Quiñones-Ruiz and seven posters! We were lucky enough to participate in the first ever National Institute of Justice Forensic Science Symposium poster session at Pittcon. The lab had a great time in Seattle, WA for the American Academy of Forensic Sciences 2018 meeting. Lab members Marisia Fikiet and Ewelina Mistek each had an oral presentation, while Dr. Lednev gave had two oral presentations. Ewelina additionally had a poster presentation.

Congratulations to Valentina D'Elia for receiving honorable mention on her poster titled "Detection of Cocaine in Oral Fluid by Ultraviolet Resonance Raman Spectroscopy"! She reported her findings at the 9th International Conference on Advanced Vibrational Spectroscopy, Victoria, Canada, 11-16 June 2017. Prof. Lednev also gave an invited talk on Raman Microspectroscopy for Forensic Purposes at this conference. Valentina is a PhD student from the University Institute of Research in Police Sciences (IUICP), Madrid, Spain who spent five months in Lednev laboratory as a research intern last year.

Kyle's oral presentation was "Accurately estimating the time since deposition of bloodstains aged for more than two years". Claire's oral presentation was "Forensic body fluid identification and differentiation by Raman spectroscopy".

Marisia Fikiet gave an oral presentation titled " Universal Detection of Body Fluid Traces In Situ with Raman Hyperspectroscopy for Forensic Purposes". Ewelina Mistek gave an oral presentation titled "Identification of species’ blood by attenuated total reflection (ATR) Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy". Nicole Ralbovsky presented a poster titled "Polarized Raman Spectroscopy for Determining the Orientation of D-Diphenylalanine Molecules in a Nanotube". Congratulations to everyone who participated!
Congratulations to our undergraduate researcher Mathew Boll for presenting his poster at the University at Albany’s 2nd Annual Undergraduate Chemistry Research Symposium. His poster titled, “Differentiation of Dyed and Undyed Hair Using ATR-FT-IR Spectroscopy” was awarded the best research poster presentation of the day.

Claire Muro gave an invited oral presentation titled "Automatic Body Fluid Differentiation by Raman Spectroscopy and Chemometrics" as well as a poster "Identification of individual red blood cells by Raman Microspectroscopy for Forensic Purposes". She was awarded third place for student posters by a panel of judges. Kyle Doty also gave an invited oral presentation titled " A Raman 'Spectroscopic Clock' for Bloodstain Age Determination" as well as a poster titled "Human and Animal Blood Differentiation using Raman Spectroscopy and Chemometrics". Kyle's poster won one of four awards for best overall poster on Sunday. Additionally Kyle was awarded the Tomas A. Hirshfeld Scholar Award.
Dr. Lednev gave three invited talks titled, " DUV Raman Spectroscopy is a Versitile Tool for Probing Protein Aggregation", " Multivaritate Analysis of Raman Spectral Data for the Identification of Body Fluid Traces" and " Two Mechanisms of Tip Enhancement of Raman Scattering by Protein Aggregates".
Both Kyle Doty and Dr. Lednev attended the XXV International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy (ICORS 2016) in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil this summer from August 14 - 19th. Kyle gave an oral presentation titled "A Raman 'Spectroscopic Clock' for Bloodstain Age Determination: The First Week After Deposition". Professor Lednev gave an invited plenary talk titled " Raman Hyperspectroscopy for Forensic Purposes and Medical Diagnostics". Congratulations to them both!
Congratulations to Marisia Fikiet for her fellowship from the U.S. Army Defense Forensic Science Center (DFSC)! Marisia's fellowship included funding for two new Raman spectrometers, including a portable hand-held instrument, which the DFSC purchased and Marisia will transfer the lab's method to. She will then travel to the DFSC in Georgia to train scientists there on the intruments. Click here for more information

Undergraduate lab member Jeremy Manheim gave a talk at the 2015 Eastern Analytical Symposium & Exposition in Somerset, NJ entitled Differentiation of Human, Animal, and Synthetic Hair by ATR FTIR Spectroscopy.
The Journal of Biophotonics chose a recent article about differentiating human blood to be featured on the cover of the January 2014 issue.
