A great book for those interested in creating surface pattern designs ...

A great book for those interested in creating surface pattern designs using Photoshop. Well written with many screen shots to help you understand how repeats can be accomplished. The author also talks you through setting up your software preferences for the best results. I highly recommend this book.

Software programs do not come to me easily the first time around, and when I have a hiatus in their use, I find I get fuzzy on how to do this or that. This book identifies the techniques used constantly in my professional field and puts them all together in one book, nicely organized, clearly explained, shown visually, and written in a friendly, engaging way. What a reassurance! Book is a little pricey, but I need this as a survival tool so can justify it to myself. Now, Frederick - can you PLEASE write a companion version for Adobe Illustrator? Need that even more than this one!!
Great way to learn tricks of the textile trade
ByMeghanLon October 28, 2013
I bought these for our graphic designers who work with handpainted artwork to learn how to take the art into textile designs. Frederick gives great detail and breaks things down into steps. His methods are very thorough. He also provides great customer service! I would recommend.

Even for the seasoned designer

I love this book. I reference it often. Although there are some things I disagree with as far as what he covered (he really should've covered trapping and overprint instead of just mentioning them), the rest of the book is phenomenal. I learned techniques that solved nagging problems. I learned different ways to do what I already do (that are better in some cases). I learned new tricks that made my life easier. It gave me almost everything I wanted out of the book.
Take note, the author was a textile designer first, then a computer-aided textile designer. If you started on the computer (as I did), some parts may be tedious for you - slog through, it's worth it. Just because you know hot keys doesn't mean you know the intended effect or final destination - take it from me on that! :D
The practice disk is helpful, and with it and the text, you'd have a full course in the technical aspects of digital textile design using Photoshop if you so desired.
High price point, but thoroughly worth it for such a technique-packed book.
Best and most comprehensive photoshop book for fashion textile designer
NOTE: I posted this review earlier last month on the CS3 version because I did not find the link to the CS5 version. Now, I came across the right version, I will post it again and share my experiences with you.
THE REVIEW: This is truly a long-due review that I wanted to write ever I since bought Adobe Photoshop For Textile Design last May. This review is for the latest version: CS5. I have never wrote a review here before. But, felt obliged to share my experience. Not only because this book is redoubtably the most in-depth, practical and to-the-point photoshop book that is out there for textile, home and fashion designers who use Photoshop to execute designs, but also because of Fredrick and his genuine interest to share his knowledge and patience to guide his readers through the process.
Prior to decide on my decision to invest in Adobe PHotoshop for Textile Design CS5, I did an extensive researches on the available resources. What I quickly noticed was some of my long pending questions were answered just by reading through some tips and tricks Frederick shared on forums where designers posted questions. I was so impressed how much He was willing to take his time to answers those questions (not just copy and paste excerpts from the book - but actually answers questions and tailor his answers to individual situations), I felt that I would not only buy a book that would help me to enhance my skills, but also gain access to someone who has first hand experiences in knowledge that I wanted to gain. Now, a year later. this book has become my handbook in photoshop design for textiles. And Frederick has become my go-to person when I am in need of guidance or not sure if my executions were proper.
This book is something that you want to keep next to you and refer back again and again when you need certain techniques. What i find extremely helpful is the various techniques in executing watercolor prints. This is something that you will not be learning in school, nor someone can teach you unless you are so lucky to meet someone like Frederick, or be able to have lots resources to learn from. If you are here reading the reviews, then, you are one of few lucky ones because you are about to uncover knowledge that will make you truly pro!!! Also, the last chapter on Spot channel is a must read if you want to gain true freedom in utilizing photoshop in your design as well as ability to prepare the files the best possible way for the makers (they will love you for that :-). There will not be words true enough to tell you what you are about to discover!! And, don't forget to drop Frederick an quick email :-) I think he deserves much more recognitions!!
