Competition can be a form of motivation that drives us to be the best we can be. Members of the PAMBC believe that competition is healthiest in educational music endeavors when the comparison is between each performing group and themselves, either measuring growth during the current season or comparing previous years achievement to the current year.
In keeping with this shared philosophy, schools who participate in the PAMBC will attend "Showcases" throughout the fall season. These showcases, hosted at member schools, will give an adjudicated (judged) opportunity for non-competitive bands to perform. Participating schools will receive feedback from trained adjudicators, in the areas of music and visual, but no rankings or numerical scores will be given. All spectators, including students from other performing bands, will be seated on the home sideline, so that everyone can listen, observe, and enjoy the performances as they were intended...from the front. This provides yet another educational opportunity for the member students involved.
I think the best gift the coalition gives my kids that they can't get at football games is the gift of perspective. It has been hard getting them out of "well this is how (we have) always done it" at times and last Saturday really showed them how many different forms a successful band can take. Especially bands that were much smaller but still put on a phenomenal show. In addition, they were absolutely floored by (all) performance(s), even from behind. When we talked about our performance after they brought up what they saw in other bands. It was an extremely valuable experience for them, especially coming midseason this time instead of at the end. I was able to play the judges recordings for them and I think we have a clear, unified direction moving forward. (My students) absolutely LOVED the visual judge and his comments.
