The generous donation made by Helyn Hawkins' estate has made it possible for the Lawrence Branch NAACP to continue to provide scholarships to graduating seniors. High School students are encouraged to apply to receive a one-time award of either $250.00 or $500.00 to be used towards the funding of their college education.Helyn Hawkins was born March 5, 1921, in Lawrence, Kansas to John C.Z. and Florence Murray Fishback.Helyn obtained a beauty school license from Madame CJ Walker's Beauty Shop in Kansas City, Missouri and another license from Lawrence in 1947. She enjoyed a long career at Vanity from 1960 through 2000 and worked at Hairport form 2000-2005. She was a member of St. Luke AME and a 50 plus member of the Siloam Chapter #10 of the Eastern Star.
