San Diego Border Context:
San Diego is a unique and fascinating context in which to study the use and features particular to varieties of Spanish spoken in the United States. It hosts the largest shared border area between the United States and Mexico and is the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere. 30% of the population living in the city of San Diego identify as Hispanic or Latino and 40% speak a language other than English at home (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016-2020).

IN PROGRESS! - Spanish in San Diego Language Corpus:
Our research team at San Diego State University is currently conducting sociolinguistic interviews with Spanish speakers and Spanish-English bilinguals living in San Diego. This future database of San Diego Spanish will be made available online for the purposes of exploring, studying, and documenting linguistic and social features of the varieties spoken in our local San Diego community.
