I consult with colleges, universities, and individual departments and programs as they assess existing policies and practices, and design and implement initiatives to strengthen equity efforts. I also work with professional organizations involved with the advancement of members of underrepresented groups, particularly in the sciences and technology. I have worked with the American Sociological Association’s Program Reviewers and Consultants (formerly the Departmental Resource Group) for more than twenty years and with NSF-ADVANCE awardees since the inception of the ADVANCE Program (2001). In 2007-2008, I served as Program Director for ADVANCE at the National Science Foundation.
Currently, I am an evaluator for the NSF ADVANCE-funded projects at Drexel University and South Dakota Mines. in collaboration with Alice Hogan and Mariko Chang, I serve as external evaluator for the NSF ADVANCE-funded project at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and in collaboration with Hogan for the University of Texas Dallas. I have served as external evaluator for ADVANCE projects at The College of New Jersey, Iowa State University (in collaboration with Alice Hogan), New Mexico State University, Purdue University (with Hogan), the University of California Irvine, Utah State University, Idaho State University, the University of Missouri, Skidmore and Union Colleges (with Hogan), the University of Miami (with Hogan) and North Carolina State University (with Hogan), the Commission on Professionals in Science and Technology and the National Postdoctoral Association. In addition, I served as consultant to the NSF-funded project “Incentives and Barriers to U.S. Academics’ Participation in International Collaborations” (Kathrin Zippel, PI; 2010).
Memberships on external advisory groups of ADVANCE Institutional Transformation projects have included: Clemson University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, North Dakota State University, Seattle University, the University of Houston, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Washington State University. I also served on the research advisory board for the Northeastern University Institutional Transformation project, the ADVANCE-PAID grant on organizational change strategies (Ann Austin, PI), and as a consultant to the NSF ADVANCE PLAN Project on faculty workload and rewards (O'Meara, PI).
In addition to evaluating projects and otherwise consulting for colleges and universities, I review proposals and participate on site visits and reverse site visits for the National Science Foundation. I lead workshops on a variety of topics related to organizational functioning, departmental culture, mentoring, and diversity in the department and in other professional settings. I also provide editorial assistance for people preparing proposals for external funding.
