The Chisos Mining Company
Early 1900s, Terlingua, Texas
Perry (Howard E. Perry, founder and president of the Chisos Mining Company) possessed very little of the milk of human kindness. He never learned a word of Spanish, and never manifested any interest in the Mexican people as fellow human creatures.
C. A. Hawley, “Life Along the Border,” Sul Ross State College Bulletin 44 (September 1964): 7-84.
…Perry exhibited little regard for the Mexicans as fellow human beings…If Perry was guilty of exploitation, then it should also be remembered that the exploited came begging for the opportunity. The Mexican to whom Perry offered a dollar a day and a place to live considered himself fortunate.
