Welcome to Langstone Pilot Gig Club

We have started 2020 with a bang with club members celebrating our 7th anniversary and our continued growth and success.  Along with weekend sessions packed with experienced crews, juniors and newcomers, we have also launched a busy programme of mid-week rowing.  This has been extremely successful with three “Just Row” crews out every week in January. The club now look forward to extending mid-week rowing to include morning and early evening training rows when the light allows it and exciting longer excursion rows this summer.

Our governing body celebrate the launch of their heritage project “Pulling Together the Past”. The CPGA (Cornish Pilot Gig Association) were awarded a Heritage Lottery Grant to document and record the history of Cornish Pilot Gig rowing which has played such an important role in the working and social lives of communities across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for generations.  These boats were used for survival and prosperity, as lifeboats, for work, salvage, pilotage and leisure.  Very early community regattas have now grown and evolved into the competitive and colourful sport that over 8,000 people across the UK now enjoy.

The design of the Cornish pilot gig has barely changed since the early days when they would go to sea in most weathers to rescue vessels in distress. Most early gigs throughout Cornwall were built at Peters boatyard in St Mawes by William Peters and his family. The mould and dimensions of William Peters gig the Treffry, built in 1838 and owned and still raced by Newquay Rowing Club, are used as the standard template for all new gigs.

The heritage and history of gigs are as important within the gig rowing community as are the races and trophies. The CPGA are in the process of gathering documents, artefacts, photographs, film and audio to create a record of memories, boat building skills, rowing practices, traditions and stories and you can access this wonderful archive at www.cornishmemory.com We have our own Heritage Interpretation Board outside the clubhouse which shows some of this fascinating history.  If you would like to know more about the history of these beautiful gigs, if you are interested in maritime history or social history, or would like to have a row in one, why not make contact with Brian on 07713 987590 or Jackie on 07977 162646 either of whom would love to hear from you.

LANGSTONE PILOT GIG CLUB ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR LOCAL SPONSORSHIP SO IF YOU ARE A LOCAL BUSINESS AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE PLEASE CONTACT JACKIE ON 07977 162646 FOR MORE INFORMATION.

OUR GIGS AND TRAILERS, OARS AND CUSHIONS AND CLUB MEMBERS TRAVEL ALONG THE COAST FROM EAST SUSSEX TO THE SCILLIES AND FROM THE ISLE OF WIGHT TO BRISTOL AND IN 2020 ACROSS EUROPE TO ITALY!

Langstone Pilot Gig Club is Hampshire's first Cornish Pilot Gig Club and we have been introducing

gig rowing and racing to our local community since 2013.  We are based at Northney Marina on

Hayling Island and we row all year-round in the beautiful waters of Chichester and Langstone Harbours.

We are a community Rowing Club run by volunteers and have around 145 members of all ages

from 11 to 80 years old, which include all levels of fitness and ability.

Our membership consists of both recreational rowers and those who wish to race in regattas throughout the summer, and in the World Pilot Gig Championships held in the Isles of Scilly. Langstone Pilot Gig Club represents Hampshire in gig rowing regattas along the Jurassic coast and into Devon and Cornwall. Rowing opportunities extend to mid week and summer evening rows and an exciting list of longer expedition rows which ensure all our members have the chance to enjoy rowing for fitness, fun or friendship.

As well as the fitness and competitive side, and the joy of being out in the fresh air year-round, our members enjoy the camaraderie of being part of a team, both in and out of the boat.  In addition, we have an excellent programme of social events which are always well attended by our members and their families.

If you would like to give Gig rowing a try we hold Open Rowing Sessions for anyone wishing to try our sport. These sessions are held most Saturday afternoons with qualified coaches and experienced rowers to guide you through. Your first row is free.
