About Dr. Nicks

Born in Seneca, SC, I grew up in Clemson.  My mother was a faculty member at Clemson.  As you can imagine, I grew up and still am a big Clemson Tiger fan.  Once it came time to go to college, can you guess where I went?  Yep, you guessed it; I went to Clemson University.

My undergraduate major was Community Recreation Management.  During my time at Clemson and in this major, I realized I had a passion for working with young people.  My major allowed me to have some wonderful experiences in this, including a 3 month trip to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to work with the local Boys & Girls Club on the base.  At some point I felt my major was a bit too unstructured for me, and I decided to get into teaching.  I still ended up graduating from Clemson in 2007 with a B.A. in Community Recreation Management.  Also, during my time at Clemson I was in the Clemson University Marching Band all four years.  I played bass drum in the drum line, which was probably my best experience during my time at Clemson.

Three weeks after I graduated from Clemson, I began studying in Clemson's Master of Arts and Teaching Program.  Being a fan of math while I was in school, I decided to become a math teacher.  This was such a great experience for me and taught me a lot about teaching in Middle School.  I graduated with my Master's in May, 2008. In May of 2024 I completed my educational doctorate degree from Converse University in Professional Leadership.

I began teaching at Beck Academy Middle School here in Greenville on August, 2008. During my time there, I taught in 6th and 7th Grade, including Algebra I in 7th Grade. During my last year at Beck I was voted Teacher of the Year. This is my 9th year at Langston Charter (17th year overall), and I've taught 6/7 math, 7/8 math, the 7th Grade & 8th Grade Algebra I course while at Langston.

I've been married to my amazing wife Mishelle for 15 years.  We have two kids: Landon who is 12, and Lilly Capri who is 10.  We also have our three "other" kids: our Lab mix named Brooks, a Great Pyrenees mix Buzz, and a bunny named Ducky.
