Mission:
Mentor Me North Georgia is a 501 (C)(3) non profit organization that has been serving the Forsyth Countycommunity since 2002. Our mission is to empower today's youth by connecting them to trusted mentors and role models and provide opportunities for children and youth to reach their full potential. Mentor Me North Georgia Serves children and youth, ages 6-17, through youth mentoring programs. We currently provide 3 different programs: One-to-One Community-Based Mentoring, Mentoring After School (MAS) for elementary students, andMentor Me Connect clubs facilitated in collaboration with Forsyth County Schools for middle and high school students. The organization serves 1,500+ students a year
Program Summary:
The Mentoring After School (MAS) program serves elementary students in Forsyth County by focusing on building academic skills through homework assistance and literacy skill development. By participating in MAS, students build a relationship of trust with their mentor and enhance their self-esteem and confidence in their performance contributing towards their ability to reach their full potential.
Essential Volunteer Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the MAS Program Manager, volunteers work as one-to-one mentors with elementary students in grades K-5. MAS Program locations: Chestatee Elementary, Forsyth Central High School, and Sawnee Elementary.
Work individually with one mentee at one location for one hour per week.
Assist with 30-45 minutes of homework assignments and other academic material which includes focusing on sight and power word recognition, reading aloud for 15-20 minutes to help with sound recognition, pronunciation, and comprehension.
Practice additional skills: multiplication tables, flash cards, and educational games.
Enjoy 15-20 minutes of positive relationship building with your mentee through: playing games, talking, drawing, and reading aloud together.
Prepare and clean-up workstation space before/after every MAS session.
Volunteer Requirements:
Be at least 14 years or older.
Fill out and submit MMNG's online volunteer information form.
Commit to one hour per week at one location from August through May. (Time and locations vary.)
Complete a mandatory training session prior to service.
Training & Supervision:
Mentor Me North Georgia requires each volunteer mentor to attend one MAS Mentor Training each school year.Trainings include important information about our program, curriculum, the MAS schedule, and resources to engage with your mentee throughout the school year. A MMNG representative supervises each MAS session and is available for additional questions and support.
Time Commitment:
Volunteers are required to commit to one hour per week from August through May.
MAS follows the Forsyth County school calendar and does not meet during school breaks, holidays, or early release days.
