Compost of La Bonne Maison from an old English Recipe

Proof of a pudding

The easy recipe relies of layers, always in the same order, until the heap reaches about 1m. It needs no turning.

Charcoled wood to absorb impurities

3 inches of Straw

9 inches of green matter (weeds, vegetable trimmings, kitchen waste, grassmovings)

or woody stuff alternately (shrub prunings)

A sprinkling of amoniac sulfate (herbal activor)

A whitening of lime (lithotame)

A sprinkling of fine soil

Some handful of peat

If you have some, two inch layer of soil for capping (not absolutely necessary, I scarcely have some at hand)

I add some dehydrated manure from time to time,

and in winter, some ashes from the wooden stove and fireplace.

Leave it for 2 months.

Water during dry weather.

All the material goes through a shredder before going on the heap.

Never use rose or clematis prunings, nor conifers.
