Incident: Grass fire threatens houses

Early this afternoon lightening from a dry thunderstorm ignited grassland adjacent to property in Robina. 5 tankers, 5 pumpers & a field control unit were dispatched from across the city to protect 14 structures including a mature age home, and control & extingush the fire. After 3 hours 5ha of grass & scrub were blackened. Todays fire highlights how dry the country is at the moment. Unfortunately no rain, fell on the city.

Fire officals noted that this is the reason the volunteer service has been created, but it is a shame that they couldn't be used as their training hasn't been completed yet. A second group of volunteers will begin their training this weekend.

Tankers for Urban Stations

Following the announcement on the 11th January, re increased staff changes, the service has decided to remove all the ultralight appliances from urban stations. But rather than removing these units from service thus not requiring the extra staff, urban tankers will be placed at these stations providing a second unit to the station. Assistant Commissioner for fleet services A.Brown said "the logic is that an urban tanker can fight a structure fire, where are ultralight cannot", he continued "this is part of a great fleet change that will see a streamlined service for the people of the Kyola region".

The ultralight tankers will be given a full service and new coat of paint for the newly established Bushfire Service.

Ladder removed from service

One of Kyola area ladders was today removed from service following the finding of a major crack in the aerial unit. As a precaution the other ladder unit has also been withdrawn from service and is now the regional spare. To compensate for this the service will keep one of the older aerial pumpers slated for reserve status to be kept on bringing the total number of aerial pumpers to three plus 1 spare.

More firefighter to frontline stations

After working closely with the firefighters union, the service has agreed to permanently staff urban tankers and ultra light tankers in permanent stations. Previously these units were staffed by other firefighters at that station. In some cases the appliances couldn’t be used because staff were at another incident.

Change to radio callsigns

After a long evaluation period, KFRS will convert its callsigns to a simpler system. This was due to confusion throughout the ranks, neighbouring brigades, and fleet management.

The new system will identify the appliance type then it station number. Eg. 702A will be “Pumper 2”.

Where the are multiple appliance of the same type Alfa, Bravo, Charlie will be added the end of the callsign. Eg the second pump from station 5 will be “Pumper 5b” or Transporter 50a.

The website and fleetlists will reflect this once all vehicles have been changed over.
