About PI

Kuniharu Takei obtained his B.S. M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Toyohashi University of Technology in Japan in 2003, 2006 and 2009 under the supervision of Professor Makoto Ishida, respectively. As part of his Ph.D., he proposed and demonstrated a new type of MEMS/CMOS/Crystal-growth neural devices, which enable us to do in-vivo neural signal recording, local drug delivery, and local optical stimulation as well as on-chip signal processing. he has also shown the first proof-of-concept of neural signal recording and drug delivery using rats. In recognition of proposals and demonstrations, I became a research fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (DC2) during Ph.D. students. Right after obtaining his Ph.D. degree, he moved to the University of California, Berkeley (Electrical Engineering Department) as a postdoctoral fellow under the supervision of Professor Ali Javey with a joint-appointment in the Material Science Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In the Prof. Javey group, he began by working on nanowire synthesis and its application of macroscale flexible electronics with low-voltage operation, resulting in becoming an artificial electronic skin (e-skin). This shows one of the promising approaches of nanomaterial integration on macroscle flexible substrates to the community of nanomaterial and devices. He also worked on freestanding ultrathin III-V semiconductor transistors by using an epitaxial layer transfer technique for high performance devices to replace current Si-based integrated circuits.  After postdoctoral fellow, he moved to Osaka Metropolitan University (Department of Physics and Electronics) (Previously Osaka Prefecture University) as a tenure-track assistant professor in 2013 April, associated professor, and a full professor.

He joined Hokkaido University (Graduate School of Information and Technology, where he is a full professor since 2023

He serves as a reviewer for Nature, Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Electronics, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communications, Nature Reviews Materials, Science Advances, Matter, NPG Asia Materials, Nano Letters, ACS Nano, Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, small, etc. and a grant/proposal reviewer for the research foundations/programs in the US, Canada, Europe, Singapore,Switzerland, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Italy as professional contributions to the fields.
