Kangsoo Kim

I am an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering, at the University of Calgary (UofC). Before joining the UofC, I was a postdoctoral researcher in the HCI Lab (University of Delaware) and the Synthetic Reality Lab (SREAL), Institute for Simulation and Training with an appointment in the College of Nursing (University of Central Florida).

In the new paradigm of technology, which merges and tightly integrates the physical, digital, and biological spheres, all the physical and digital things are becoming more and more intelligent and connected to each other through the Internet, and the boundary between them becomes blurry and seamless.

My research explores how to develop more influential interactive systems and how to effectively and efficiently enhance human abilities using immersive eXtended Reality (XR)—Virtual/Augmented/Mixed reality (VR/AR/MR), while pursuing better understanding of human perception and behavior in (social) interactions with/through virtual entities, in a broad scope of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and User Experience (UX). For example, I investigate the effects of embodied Virtual Humans (VHs) with coherent and plausible behaviors interacting with the surrounding physical environment on the sense of social presence with the VH and the trustworthiness of it.

Research Areas

  • XR (VR/AR/MR)

  • Virtual Avatars & Agents

  • Social Interaction in XR

  • Perception and Cognition in XR

  • Pervasive XR and IoT

  • Computer Vision for XR

*** PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

I am actively seeking self-motivated and hard working students who are interested in interdisciplinary XR research and will work together in a diverse and inclusive research culture. The research opportunities are open to creative and technical (BSc, MSc, and PhD) students wishing to pursue academic/industry careers in AR, VR, simulation, interactive media, and applied research fields. If you are interested, please check my research publications, and contact me with a formal email addressing your interests, questions, and goals.
