KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS.

A GREAT GATHERING AT SAYRE,
PA. WHEN SAYRE COUNCIL
WAS INSTITUTED.

Sayre, Pa., Jan. 1. - About 600 members
of the Knights of Columbus were in Sayre
to-day to assist in the organization of
Sayre council, No. 1,807. The members
came from many different places, a large
number coming from Pittston, Scranton,
Wilkes-Barre, Elmira, Hornell, Ithaca,
Cortland, Auburn, and Geneva. All the
visiting members and candidates as well
as many others attended high mass at
the Church of the Epiphany at 9 o'clock
this morning. Rev. Father Nolan, assist-
ant rector of the church, celebrated the
mass. At noon, the candidates for initia
-tion into the local council assembled at
Eighmey Hall where at 1 o'clock the first
degree was conferred by the degree team
from Towanda. The second degree was
conferred by the team from Waverly and
the third degree was exemplified by J. J.
Rahilly, state deputy of Philadelphia, as-
sisted by District Deputy W. J. Conlon,
of Pittston, Pa. There were fifty two
candidates in the class and these with
twenty-five mebmres [sp] of the order for-
merly belonging to the council at Waverly
compose the charter membership of the
Sayre council. Following the degree
work this afternoon the following officers
of the new council were installed: Grand
knight, Daniel Clarey; deputy grand
knight, L. E. Murphy; chancellor, John
Boyle; warden, Leo F. Daly; financial
secretary, John Line; recording secretary,
F. H. Kinney; treasurer, W. J. Moon; in-
side guard, Jeremiah Sweeney; trustees,
John F. Reilly, John J. Kane and John En-
wright, sr.; chaplain, Rev. J. L. Shanley;
advocate, M. H. McCabe. A buffet lunch-
eon was served during the day to all
members in the Knights of Columbus hall,
formerly the Elk's hall, on Desmond
street, and this evening a banquet was
served to the candidates, and the visiting
degree teams and officers in the P. O. S.
of A. hall on Lockhart street.
