The Mumm Farm

This photo was originally taken in black and white by Effie before 1936. Glen had it colored to give it a more authentic look at the farm place. (double click on the photo to bring up a larger image).

All of Henry and Anna Christina Mumm's children were born in the house pictured above as were Lyle and Sharlene Replogle and Jeris Sievers.

To the left is what must have been a early photo of the house.

While the side of the house to the road would be considered the front, no one, including visitors would have entered into the parlor.

The structure to the left of the house was a "summer kitchen" and was closed off in the winter months. The summer kitchen was a very large room used for preparing and eating meals. There was a large table with benches for seating.

There was a gravity fed water faucet from a cistern northwest of the place on some higher ground. The Mumm house did have electricity, but no pressured water system and no bathroom. It is hard to understand today why none would have been installed especially when there was electricity. One can only guess that it must have been considered to much of a luxury to afford it any any available funds were used for the farming enterprise.

Johnny was the last member of the family to live in the house until his death in 1959 and even then there was no pressure water system or a bathroom.

The Mumm farm is some two and one-half miles west of Yutan occupying the southwest corner of that intersection. Their was a additional 80 acres on the northeast corner of the same intersection. Some two miles north was a second Mumm farm. The Mumms' also farmed land some four miles est of the "north" farm on what was always referred to as "the bottom".

Interesting to note that if one would traverse up and down the road on which the Mumm farm was situated (now known as county road 8) and within a half mile east or west thereof one would encounter farms of siblings of grandpa and grandpa; The Trost, Thomas and Storm farms.

Another photo Henry and Anna Christina with two of their children. It is believed that the girl is Leona and the boy most likely Eland who was two years older than Leona. Note the dirt yard. In all the years Lyle was at the farm he does not recall it being anything other than dirt. It would not be unusual for cars or trucks o be pulled up by the house.

Photo on the left perhaps taken in 1936 on the south side of Mumm house. Photo is of grandchildren Lyle Replogle, LaDonna Monnich, Sharlene Replogle as well as Grandpa and Grandma Mumm with their son Glenn.
