We left home about 2:00 pm. Mark, our neighbor helped with the hitch and Mike with a handshake. Stopped at Flying J in Mango and filled the propane in between rain storms. Arrived at Myakka River State Park at 5 pm. Saw some alligators sunning in the river and a group of deer grazing way out in the open. Had something to eat, walked Gypsy, saw more vultures, gators and deer up close. Took a hot shower each and…..
I’m lying on the bed with Gypsy. We are relaxing in the cool air of our smaller version of home. We all had a busy day today. My baby worked really hard out in the heat and got us on the road. The waiting is over, someday is here! The ride in the park was great, we stopped on the side of the road to see the gators and the dear, Bob has a great eye for finding animal far away and mixed in the tall grass, not sure how he does that but I’m glad he can! Looking forward to a good nights sleep in my new bed and whatever will come our way next on our adventure!
18 May 2010
Got up late today, at least I did. Had some coffee and got the bikes off the bike rack. We needed to see if the laptop would connect with the wi-fi available at the park. We took a short bike trip to the Myakka Outpost and got were pleasantly surprised with a pretty fast connection. We did our necessary downloads, checked some e-mail and visited the souvineer store. Went back to check on Gypsy before a longer bike ride. We were just pedaling at a moderate rage when “whoosh”, an inline skataer came rushing by. I mean this person just blew by us, must have been going close to 30 mph. We think it may have been a female because of the long reddish hair, but could have been a dude also. Anyway this person was hauling! Saw some wild turkeys eating out in a field. Adjusted my brakes on the bike, adjusted the hangar on the torsion hitch on the truck, checked the oil and had a sandwich. Gonna BBQ tonight! Kim’s reading, Gypsy’s snoozing and I’m gonna go rest.
Got up early today with Gypsy, her usual 6-6:30am, daylight is just breaking. Took her out to do her business and fed her breakfast. Then we went back to bed for a little bit while Bob was still sleeping. Once Bob got up and had his coffee we took out the bikes for a nice ride. Bob looks so cute on his bike. Came back about an hour or so later and took a break from the heat. About 4 o’clock we headed back out on the bikes to the canopy walkway. A rope bridge high up in the trees. On the way we saw lots of deer and wild pigs. After the walkway we took the nature walk. We heard rustling in the big palmetto bushes, I said “what if we are attacked out here, who is going to miss us, what about Geeps..” Then it stopped and we kept on walking. Shortly after we heard a bunch of pigs talking to each other just off the path. Bob wanted to go investigate, I said sure you go and I’ll go back to the bikes, lets get out of here, and so we did. Later Bob made yummy burgers on the little grill we got. Gypsy is worried and not relaxed. I hope she gets used to us being on the road.
Truck breaks down on highway on the way back to the house. ‘nough said..

All good things come to those that wait. Well, today was an especially good day. We left home about 9 am. And arrived at Grayton State Park, Santa Rosa Beach around 4 pm., got all hooked up and had a bite to eat. We took the bikes up to the beach. No tar balls here. Absolutely the finest white sand beach I’ve ever been on. The water was warm and there was a cool breeze. We watched the sunset, rinsed off and rode back home. Walked Gypsy, and now things are winding down.We repacked, rehitched and we were on our way. Long drive today, but I think it was worth it. After setting up we went to the beach… I love it up here on the panhandle. The water was perfectly clear and warm and we ended the day with a great sunset. Gypsy is passed out on the bed and I’m on my way. Can’t wait for the beach in the morning!
14 June 2010
Went to the beach for a while in the afternoon, it was just too hot for me in the morning, I think the temperature reached 100 degrees yesterday and today wasn’t any cooler. We came back and rested. I put the basket on the bike so that at sunset we could take Gypsy along to the dunes with us. Cooked dinner, let it cool, and rode up to one of the pavilions to watch the sun. A couple red-wing black birds put on a display for us as the sun set. Got some great pictures. Came home, had dinner, got cleaned up, read and went to sleep.
Got to sleep in today, about 8:20. Gypsy was so tired from the day before she didn’t wake up me up at the usual 5:30-6:00am time. I was very thankful for that! I got up and dress for the beach. Took my bike down and enjoyed the sun and water. Came back to the camper and hung out with Bob and Gypsy. We had lunch and then Bob and I headed to the beach. Later we took Gypsy on the bikes with us in her cute little basket that Bob made. I love that he is so crafty and loves to take Gypsy with us.
15 June 2010
Got up had some Joe and one of Kim’s incredible blueberry muffins. Gotta get ready to go. Heading to Pace near Pensacola to visit Auntie Rita and Jim Wahoo! It took a few hours to get to Pace. Thunderstorms arrived just after us but only lasted a few hours. Catching up on everything. Gypsy sure feels at home here. We all had a nice rib dinner.
Packed up the campsite. Another hot day today. I'm glad that Bob doesn't mind doing all the man stuff like the hitch, tires and the dump station. Really happy about the dump station! Had a nice drive to my Aunts house and got to have a nice visit and a dinner without dishes.
16 June 2010
Kim went shopping and picked up the ingredients for making a big batch of breakfast burritos. We both love them.
Took my Aunt to Walmart today to do some shopping. Did some laundry and made salad, burgers and corn on the cob and breakfast burritos. Also made some yummy brownies! Bob grilled the burgers, he so good at that. Getting ready for bed soon, Gypsy is ready to hit the hay!
17 June 2010
Drove to Luling, Louisiana, just a little south of New Orleans, to visit cousin Jena, Tab, Sydney and Nick. Met a new friend, Rhea and we all spent the day at the pool, bar-b-qued and lounged by the pool. Just what we needed, another totally relaxing day.
On our way again. Going to stop and see cousin Jena, Tab and the kids. Gypsy was looking forward to seeing Harry. He's a Chow mix and he and Gypsy hit if off great when we were there last October. Unfortunately Harry was sick and he is no longer with us. We miss Harry. After unpacking and setting up in our favorite room over the garage, we visted with everyone for a little while. Next day we went to Rhea's house to swim in her pool. What a nice day! Thanks again Jena for those daiquiri's.
18 June 2010
Left New Orleans about 12:30 pm hoping to miss the traffic around Baton Rouge during rush hour. Great scenery over the cypress swamps. Arrived at Sam Houston Jones State Park around 5 p.m. As we drove in there were deer standing near the entrance as if to greet us. This is a very beautiful and peaceful park. This park, like the others, was quite booked up, and I can see why. There are nice tent sites mixed among the RV sites. Kim made a quick dinner and we headed out for a ride on the bikes. We had an excellent time. There is a beautiful black water river that runs through the park with tall shade trees on the banks. Lots of animals, deer everywhere, families of raccoons, ducks, bats, armadillos, wood peckers, turtles and something deep in the cypress swamp that makes a sound like a cross between a goose and a frog. We’ll check out the nature trails tomorrow.
Packed up for the last time today. Now we are really on the road. No more relatives to visit and houses to stay in. I'm looking forward to heading out west. This is the furthest west I've ever driven before. The park we are at now is very nice. Lots of wild life. We saw a momma Raccoon with about 4 little babies on the side of the road looking for food. An armadillo walked right in front of us while we were on our bikes. Very cool. Looking forward to the nature trails tomorrow.
19 June 2010
Got up and went into town for lunch. I was looking forward to having some real Cajun type fare. We found a place called Steamboat Bill’s that was exactly what the doctor ordered. I had Crawfish and Shrimp E’toufe a bowl of chicken and sausage gumbo and a side of butterfly shrimp. Back at camp we decided to give one of the trails a try on the bikes. What the heck, let’s try the Blue Trail. Wrong choice. Within a mile we had to get off the bikes and walk them both up and down some of the hills because of the steepness and the size of the tree roots. There was not a breeze anywhere. It was just HOT! I didn’t even see a lizard, everything must have been cooked to death. Luckily we took some water with us and took plenty of rest stops. We didn’t bring a camera, but that was pure luck, we never would have made it out of there with one more ounce of load to carry.
After relaxing with Gypsy early in the morning I went for a short nature trail walk. It was nice and quite. Didn’t see any more animals on my walk. Hung out with Bob a little and we went to lunch as he mentioned. I got the butterfly shrimp, very good. Later we experienced the bike trail from hell. Worked off all that lunch and more! Put Gypsy in the basket and took her out for a bit. She’s really getting used to the basket.
20 June 2010
Left Sam Houston Jones Park about 11 am and had a new battery installed on the truck. It was still starting, but one of the batteries was spitting water and smoking a little, so I figured it was best to get another one. That took about an hour, and we were on the road again. This time we were headed for Brazo Bend State Park in Texas. We arrived around 4 p.m. and had our choice of places to camp. We’re in a shaded site with no neighbors. We haven’t done any exploring, but there seems to be quite a bit to do here. I may even get in some fishing.
Made it to Texas! This is by far the best park we’ve been to. We went for a short bike ride after we set up, saw
and a gator right by the trail. Looking forward to seeing more tomorrow.
21 June 2010
Wonderful day today! I took my time getting up, had a nice cup of coffee from the French Press. I used the coffee Jena gave me, thank you very much. I grabbed the laptop and we drove up to the park headquarters where they have wi-fi. I was able to update our web site and check e-mail and numbers. We stopped by the Nature Center of the park and saw the exhibits and read about all of the flora and fauna. Today’s outing was again on the bikes. We took a long trail out past where we were yesterday. Gators, birds, huge crawfish (which the birds gorge on), a
wild pig (a loud grunt and a flash of black) and of course some more rabbits. The owls here are a hoot! Not only do they make the common hoot-hoot sound, but they also make this really funny sound like they are gargling at the same time. We haven’t seen any owls except at the exhibits. There are both Barred Owls and Screech Owls here. We went back to the camper and put the basket on the bike and picked up Gypsy. We rode some more trails and stopped to watch the deer feeding.
Had a nice start to the day, I slept in! After Bob got up we took care of some business, phone calls and internet stuff. Our stop at the Nature Center included a little baby gator that I got to pet. They are really soft, didn’t expect that. You could hold the snakes too, but I passed. When we got back to the camper we planned out some more of our trip. We got a Texas State Park pass and we are trying to plan as many as we can to get our money’s worth. Looking forward to the northern part of Texas and New Mexico where it will be cooler and no humidity. We added on another night here in Brazos Bend. For the amount of water around here there aren’t many mosquitoes, but there sure are plenty of fireflies at night.
We had to take the truck to get to the showers tonight, they are far from our site. Feels good to be clean and ready for bed, good night! Easy day today. Got up and decided we’d go out for lunch. After inquiring about local Mexican fare, we were directed to the closest town (12 miles away) and to a quaint small restaurant in the middle of town. Needville is a small town that is the hub of an agricultural area of cow farms, hay, millet and some other low growing crop we had never seen. We’d have no other reason in the world to go there other than to stop for a bite to eat. That made it more interesting than it really was. After lunch I took a siesta. Kim worked on the route and did a super job again, finding us great places that have electricity included so we can keep poor Gypsy cool in this high heat while we go out exploring. We’ll soon be heading to higher elevations which should be much cooler. Just about everything is booked up for the 4th of July weekend, so Kim made some reservations in Santa Fe for the full 4 days. I’ve never been there and am really looking forward to seeing it along with Toas and possibly Los Alamos. Heck, I’m talking about New Mexico, we aren’t even a quarter of the way across Texas. Talking with a fellow camper, we found some great information of things to do in North Texas and of a great steak place in Amarillo (my kind of food).
We decided to walk a nature trail as the day cooled down. Towards the end of our trek we saw a hawk swoop from the tree we passed under clutching his furry evening meal. To quote the famous dentist office visiting pelican in Finding Nemo, “a Fish gotta swim …. a bird's gotta eat”. The batteries in the camera died, so I couldn't get any pictures.
23 June 2010
We left Brazos a little early because we had a side trip in mind. Namely to pick up a couple parts I had ordered from Napa. I wanted to be able to isolate the truck batteries from the trailer batteries, especially for when we do a lot of dry camping up north. The truck charges the trailer battery, which is nice, but the trailer will also use the truck batteries as well as its own when not plugged in. Anyway, we headed to Lochhart Texas. Another nice surprise, what a little gem of a town, a unique city hall and small downtown area. Neighborhoods were all green and manicured, with tree lined streets. Supposedly the B-B-Que capital of Texas. We tried a place that was recommended, and we decided that we’ll have to try a few other places befored we crown a winner. Very different than we’ve had before, they basically only use a rub and don’t use B-B-Que sause at all. It seemed more like smoked meats. Oh, well, it still was good.
We were into Texas hill country now, and the drive was fun. Another hour past Lockhart and we came to Blanco River State Park. We stopped to shop just before arriving. When we arrived, we checked in, parked, and walked to the river and went swimming. Beautiful clean water. No gators. A warm breeze that actually felt cool. This is great. I just had to post this photo of Livengood Feed for my pal Bob Libengood. The other photo is of Lockhart City Hall.Had a nice ride to Blanco State Park today. The landscape is changing from flat farmland to hills and trees. Stopped at the local store to pick up some supplies and got some great steaks! Bob cooked them on our little grill, he’s the best at that. We asked at headquarters when we checked in where to get good food. The said the bowling ally has the best! We said ok we need to try that. Everything in town is in walking distance. The river here is clean and cool. We went in last night and cooled off. It’s not as hot here and we are able to sit outside.
24 June 2010
We took the bikes into the small town just outside the park. We headed to the bowling alley which was touted as having the best food in town. We thought we’d ride around the outskirts of town, but having run out of town going two blocks east, west and north south we headed back to the camp, got changed and went swimming in the river again. We were the only two that we could see in the entire stretch of river, the water was warm, clear and colored a light jade green. I tried my hand at fishing, but no luck. On the way back from lunch, we passed under a bridge and noticed a bunch of mud bird nests attached to the underside of the beams. Swallows of some type. Kim noticed a bird feeding a chick. When I looked at the nest through the binoculars all I could see was this huge gaping mouth. The chick would just sit there not making a sound with its huge mouth wide open, wavering around trying to balance its big head, hoping not to fall over from the shear size of it before mom was back with the next meal. It was hilarious. Gypsy is definitely getting much more comfortable. She enjoys just being outside, laying in the grass and sniffing the air. I enjoy the same thing, each time we return to the campgrounds someone has a grill going and the smells are heavenly. A great thing to return to each time you're away.
A beautiful morning today with a nice cool breeze. Well, they were right the bowling ally does have great food. Had lunch there today with Bob. The place looks like it was open in the ’60 with little updating and only 6 lanes to bowl in. They also had smoking side to dine and a non smoking side. Haven’t seen that in years! It got a little warm in the afternoon so we took out bikes to the river. It was really nice and refreshing. Off to San Angelo State Park for the weekend before heading north past Lubbock to Palo Duro State Park.
25 June 2010
We left Blanco River about noon and filled the truck. The trip today would be all back roads. We went through Luckenbach, Fredericksburg, Cherry Spring, Mason, Menard, Eden and finally San Angelo. Beautiful hill country, with lots of ranches of cattle, goats and sheep. We even saw a ranch that was raising Elk. We wound up in much more level country and drier, although it did rain today. We happened to eat at a real gem of a restaurant, one of those places you hope to be able to experience on a trip like this. The Mexican food was the best I’ve eaten. It was quite out of the way and there is no way we would have found this if it hadn’t been suggested by a local. We met a nice couple Robert and Mary, retired from cotton farming up in northern Texas, Levelland to be exact.
I’m going to miss Blanco, it was 86 with a cool breeze today. But onward we go. It was a nice ride today. I really like Texas. Today we are in San Angelo. Very different from all the other parks we’ve been to so far. Dry, flat and you can see for miles. We set up and the cool rain came in just for a minute to two and then we headed out for dinner. Best taco’s I’ve ever had. Talked with our neighbors for a while when we got back from dinner and enjoyed the full moon tonight. Calling it a night!
26 June 2010
Hot and windy, if you evcr wanted to dry food, this would be the place. We saw some bison near the front gate when we arrived, we’re hoping to see them again, along with some Texas Longhorns that reside in the park. We’re going into town today to do some grocery shopping and to pick up a small electrical terminal that needs replacement on the battery.
Not too much to do in this park in San Angelo. I vacuumed and we went to Wal-Mart for shopping and went to Denny’s to use the internet. On the way back from shopping we saw at the front gate a bunch of Buffalo. They walked right past us and of course Bob got great pictures. Later that night we went for a walk after dinner and saw Jackrabbits. Getting ready for a long ride tomorrow to Palo Duro Canyon, the Grand Canyon of Texas!
27 June 2010
We drove a bit longer than usual today. We headed due north straight into the open plain region of Texas, just a little south of Amarillo at Palo Duro Canyon State Park. This is the “Grand Canyon of Texas”. No internet here nor cell phones either. I think the guy camping next to us spent at least an hour in the mid-day heat trying to align his satellite receiver for TV. Poor guy, maybe he’ll finally get it aligned and be able to receive the “National Geographic Channel” and see some digital wildlife. I like Texas more than I thought I would. I had the idea of Interstate 10 in my mind from having been across it so many times in the past. If you spend one day on I-10 crossing Texas, you are so ready to get across it, you just drive across as fast as you can just to be done with it. This time, I was able to appreciate all the different zones of Texas.
We scouted out the park by taking a drive around. Notice how I used the word “scouted”? That’s what we do here in Texas. They don’t just check things out here. They scout, like the old west, Injuns and things being what they are. There are plenty of trails and things to explore. The animals have it made here. Nooks and crannies, tunnels, dells, hollows, creeks, caves, streams, rocks, sand and cliffs to name a few things. We came across a tarantula crossing the road ……. to get to the other side of course! Anyway, he was just crossing as I said, and I asked if I could get a photo, me being a tourist and all. “Well, if you make it snappy, I’ve got places to go, and how’s my hair by the way?” he asked “Your hair is just fine” I politely replied and took a couple shots of his best side. “You’re going to be famous on the internet”, I yelled to him as he scurried on his way. We’re here! This place is awesome. You would never know it was here. Nice ride today, Bob always does a great job driving. We are setting up and I’m sure will go exploring. No cell phone service here. They have an outdoor amphitheater and have performances of the play “Texas” Tuesday through Sunday.
28 June 2010
Had a great day again. Went to town to use the internet and had lunch. Came back and went to a hike to the cliffs. It was the middle of the day, so not too many large animals out. The formations are incredible and it all has to do with the layers of rock. The red color is the oldest, even before the dinosaurs. Turkeys came through our camp and I even managed to get a short video of the turkey chicks running away.
Day started off overcast with a little rain. It was cool, that’s right cool. No sweating, no humidity. Yeah I said it, all you Florida folk back home. No humidity! Relaxed in the morning as we like to after a long day of driving. Later we went into town to use the wifi at McDonalds and out to lunch. We then took a look around the park that we didn’t see yesterday. Info center, to learn about the rocks and the CCC from back in the 1930’s who built the only road down to the bottom of the canyon. As we drove to the floor of the canyon to our camp site we parked in a small lot and took a walk. We then later took our chairs and sat outside and watched the wildlife come to us! They just walk right on by or stay and hang out in your campsite. After dinner we all went for a drive around the park, Gypsy liked this very much. We keep seeing tarantulas crossing the street, but not too much else tonight. On arriving after dark at our site there was a large deer near our table. I think we are going to be staying here for a few extra days, lots to do and see.
29 June 2010 We went into Canyon to the Panhandle Plains History Museum. It is on the campus of Texas A&M. This is an excellent museum with great displays of the history back to the original inhabitants, the white mans move west and the conflicts and defining wars. A great display of the beginnings of oil discover and extraction and specific geology of the plains of Texas. An automobile and weapon display. I have to add that the weather here is some of the nicest I’ve ever encountered. The day time temperatures are high 80’s to low 90’s but feel pleasant because of the very low humidity and a breeze is always blowing. You don’t actually sweat like a pack animal, like in Florida. After the mid-day sun the days get more and more pleasant. By evening there is a cool breeze blowing. The night-time temperatures get to around 65 degrees.
30 June 2010
Going to go into town to do some food shopping and I’ve got to pick up some oil for an oil change on the truck. We’ll check the internet when we’re in town. Looks like we’re going to see the play “Texas”, this evening. Just took it easy today, lied around, read a book and grilled some steaks we picked up in town. We went to the play and came back to camp around 11 pm. The play was a musical-drama performed on an outdoor stage in the Palo Duro Canyon with the cliffs lit up at times as the back drop and part of the stage. The stars were out like nothing we see in Florida. We thought the play would be a more definitive accounting of the history of Texas, but they left out Mexico, the civil war, the Alamo, statehood, and oil discovery and production. The play was basically a love-romance during the period of strife between the cattle ranchers and farmers and the Indians had been put on the reservation in Oklahoma. The railroad had just arrived at the end of the play. Everyone married each other, someone rode a galloping horse across the front of the cliff in a spotlight carrying the Texas flag, the audience cheered, and everyone lived happily ever after.
Yep did errands and the play…. Glad we got the cheap seats.
Road trip to Alaska, from Florida to Alaska, taking the trailer across the country.
