HCBE Honors in Major Program
The official website of the NSU Honors in Major Program provides information on the program's purpose, benefits, and application qualifications. Here, I share answers to FAQs as the Honors Liaison of the Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship (HCBE), your point of contact for any questions you may have regarding the program following enrollment. I hope to address all your "OK, I'm in, now what?" questions. To earn your honors designation upon graduation, your top priority is to maintain good standing in the program. But what does that entail?
We need to make sure (i) that you maintain the 3.8+ cumulative NSU GPA you were admitted to the program with through graduation and (ii) that you complete an applied or research-oriented project.
For the latter, we have options. It can be an internship, a research project, OR an independent study, all of which would need to be under the supervision of a business faculty member.
If your internship is taken for business credit and under the supervision of a business faculty member, it would meet the professional standards of the business school and thus fulfill the internship requirement of the HCBE Honors in Major Program.
If your internship was not for business credit, I would need documentation from your home department chair to justify the professional validity of your internship position.
Given the qualification, your internship before your acceptance to the HCBE Honors in Major Program counts. We focus on the quality and relevance of your internship experience, rather than its exact timing.
You will need to identify a business faculty member to be your research advisor and work on a topic that both of you are comfortable with. Your progress will be something that you and your advisor mutually agree upon, and the two of you have absolute leeway in the research.
Timing-wise, unless you're already working on it, the project would need to be completed in under a year, since the Honors in Major Program is only available during your senior year. That said, I strongly encourage you to start as early as you can once you are enrolled in the program. Research takes time.
As we approach your graduation date, typically during the month prior (e.g., April for May graduation), I will discuss your completion with your advisor and the Farquhar Honors Program.
As an Honors-in-Major student, you will see the Honors Student Resources course pop up on your Canvas dashboard. Unless you are also working on an honors minor, the course is purely informational, and you are not obligated to do anything in it. You are eligible, but are not required, to participate in honors events. However, they present good opportunities and are strongly encouraged.
