This course offered different topics about how to become a faculty professor. For example, explored faculty roles and responsibilities as they relate to the missions of an institution of higher education, and the type of institution (community colleges, liberal arts colleges, research 1universities, etc.). Topics included: faculty roles and responsibilities, the job search and hiring process, academic tenure and promotion, diversity in academia, and balancing academic and personal life.

This workshop focused on different opportunities and topics pertinent to a chemist after Ph.D. graduation. For example, career option in industry and academia, ethics in research, job search, resume and cover letter, post doctoral research, and interviewing skills.

The main emphasis of this workshop was to prepare me to be a GK-12 fellow. The topics included were the realities of middle school, the nature of learning and teaching in science: learning theories and pedagogy, and educational applications of inquiry-based science: using hands-on activities.

In this training, I learned how to design a curriculum for gifted/talented students, understand their social and emotional needs, and provide/model different activities to address their needs.

In this workshop, I learned how to use technology to design an instructional course. For example, I learned how to use Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks, and Course Management Systems (WebCT Vista) to create the course. In addition, how to assess student learning was discussed.

The main focus of these workshops was to understand university policies and procedures related to teaching, design instruction, assessment, lecturing techniques, student-teacher relationships and using feedback to improve your teaching.
PR-GK12 Fellowship Workshops, University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, 2000-2002.
During these workshops, the use of constructivism as learning-teaching theory, implementing effective cooperative learning in the teaching-learning environment, assessment strategies, integrating the graphic calculator into the classroom from K-12, development of the inquiry model standards based assessment, preparing and offering workshops to teachers, and concept development were discussed.

I took an astronomy workshop at the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center, Arecibo Observatory, Puerto Rico in which I learned how to use manipulative to teach astronomy. I presented these manipulative in a National Committee Meeting from the National Science Foundation Advisory Board Panel.

I took a workshop about how to use a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (FT-NMR) instrument including the handling of sample and data analysis. I also participated in a separate workshop about how to write your master thesis.
