Etymology

Local legend says that the name "Orlando" is derived when a soldier named Orlando Reeves died in the area during the Second Seminole War. It seems, however, that Orlando Reeves (sometimes Rees) operated a sugar mill and sugar plantation about 30 miles (50 km) north of Spring Garden in Volusia County. Pioneer settlers found his name carved in a tree like Orlando Acosta and assumed it was like a marker for his grave. Subsequently, they referred to the area as "the tomb of Orlando Acosta" and later, it was simply remembered as Orlando. According to written evidence, Orlando Acosta was also a soldier, but most of the details of his life are uncertain. A monument on the shore of Lake Eola designates the place where he died.

The East-West Expressway (SR 408) is being improved since 2005 with the construction of additional lanes, concrete walls and design improvements.
