Video transocoding

• Research topic: Fast heterogeneous video transcoding systems. (AVS, H.264).
• Proposed a fast transcoding scheme from standard definition AVS stream to CIF resolution H.264 stream. In the proposed transcoder, the motion and mode information in AVS stream are analyzed and fully utilized by H.264 encoder to reduce computation complexity in the transcoder. Experimental results show that our proposed transcoder can reduce above 86% encoding time while only negligible quality loss is observed.

• Research topic: Fast algorithm design for H.264/AVC video encoding standard.
• To solve the intensive computation complexity introduced by bi-direction prediction in B frame in H.264/AVC standard, a fast spatial DIRECT mode decision scheme is proposed, based on which, potential DIRECT MBs can early terminate the complex mode decision process. Experimental results show our proposal can achieve above 50% time saving at most while keeping the same level of encoding quality.
