Suppose an asset is proportioned as follows: 30% for person A, 30% for person B, 20% for person C and 20% for person D. This distribution adds up to 100%(30+30+20+20). Now suppose person A dies. The new proportions before adjustment are 30%, 20% and 20%. This adds up to 70. To re-proportion the distribution after the death of A, requires adjusting the 30% from A's share and then adding to original shares(in percent).
The person with an original 30% share would now get an extra 3/7 of the 30% share or 90/7 plus B's original 30% which is 12.857 +30 = 42.86%. C & D's share are both 20%, so if we figure out the new share for C, D's share will be the same. To do this, we take 2/7 of 30% or 60/7 plus C's original 20%. Which is 8.57+20 = 28.57%.
Therefore, A's new share is 42.86% and C & D's share is 28.57%. 42.86+28.57+28.57 = 100%
