School of Languages and Linguistics

School of Languages and Linguistics is an outcome of one of the new initiatives taken by the University for pursuing research across disciplines. The school earlier known as 'School of Languages' entered into its current phase of activities from the year 2009-10. In this year Prof. Mahidas Bhattacharya joined as a Professor of Linguistics and joined the academic faculty of the school. Courses like certificate and ED courses in Linguistics were started subsequently in the year 2010-11. The academic committee of the school has approved Mphil and PhD courses in Linguistics. PhD in Linguistics has commenced already whereas MA and Mphil in Linguistics are expected to begin from the academic year 2013-14.However all the Indian and foreign language courses were a part of the academic programmes run by the faculty of arts since long ago.

The school is currently functioning under Faculty of Arts and expected to become a part of the faculty of Interdisciplinary schools once the JU act and statues are being revised.

School of Languages and Linguistics comprises of a director, two assistant professors and several guest faculties from various departments of the university as well as outside.

The school has approximately 300 students.
