About
I am a Full Professor in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Northern Illinois University (NIU), USA, and AIC Director of the Ph.D. Program. Before joining NIU in 2016, I was a tenured Assistant Professor at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the Federal University of Goiás, Brazil, and a CNPq Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Heinz H. Bauschke at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan), Canada. I received my Ph.D. in Mathematics from IMPA (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) under the supervision of Alfredo N. Iusem, and my B.Sc. in Mathematics and M.Sc. in Analysis from the University of Havana, Cuba.
I work in continuous optimization: the design, convergence analysis, and complexity of algorithms for structured problems in nonsmooth and convex optimization, variational inequalities, monotone inclusions, and vector/multiobjective optimization. Recent themes include circumcentered-reflection methods for convex feasibility, proximal-gradient and splitting methods with explicit line searches, semi-smooth Newton methods for projection equations and conic problems, and finite convergence of projection algorithms.
My research is currently supported by NSF grant DMS-2307328, Design and Analysis of Algorithms for Structured Optimization (2023–2026). Earlier support includes NSF grant DMS-1816449 (2018–2021), NIU Research & Artistry and CLAS Summer grants, and CNPq Universal and Productivity Research grants (2013–2016).
