This two pictures were obtained in 2012 in Bellevue (Newfoundland, Canada) during Capelin (Mallotus villosus) sampling. We were interested in compare Capelin and a close relative Rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) sperm behavior at different salinities.
The Capelin spawning is something really amazing to see. During the spring time, depending on the weather conditions, they massively spawn in beaches substrate what implies high mortalities, probably close to 100%. After each spawning event is very common that the beaches are completely covered of dead fishes.

Sperm collection from Brook trout. In Cape Race there are several Brook trout populations that have been separate since the late-Wisconsinan glaciation (21,000 years ago) and present marked life-history variation in growth, age and size at maturity, egg size and fecundity. Also the males present a clear variation in their spawning coloration and sperm quality.
