Tragopogon dubiusaka Yellow Salsify, Western Salsify, Wild Oysterplant
Family: Aster
Native of Europe.
Observed July 2013 along north part of Linn Creek Recreational Trail in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Range: Most of North America except the Southeast (Audubon Wildflowers).
At a glance this may be mistaken for a dandelion, but the leaves are completely different. Difficult to spot because the flower closes up in direct sun. By 10:00 a.m. the flowers will close with not a hint of yellow to be seen. The taproot is edible and is said to taste like oysters (Williamson).

The seed ball is like a dandelion but much larger. It looks nothing like the flower but can be identified by the leaves.
