Biography
Dr. Joseph K. Nwankpa is the Director of Cybersecurity Initiatives and an Associate Professor & Endres Associate Professor of Information Systems and Analytics in the Farmer School of Business at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.
His extensive research interests span a diverse array of topics, including cybersecurity, digital transformation, predictive modeling, ICT for development, and the strategic use of social media. Dr. Nwankpa has authored over 35 scholarly articles published in esteemed journals, such as the European Journal of Information Systems, Information and Management, Communications of the Association for Information Systems, Computers in Human Behavior, Annals of Operations Research, Artificial Intelligence Review, Computers & Security, International Journal of Information Management, Information Resources Management and the Journal of Knowledge Management, and in the proceedings of various Information Systems conferences and workshops including AMCIS, HICCS, ICIS, and INFORMS establishing himself as a leading voice in his field. His scholarly publications have been featured in leading business magazines and media outlets worldwide, including Entrepreneur, Fast Company, Accounting Today, Toronto Star, Mexico Business News, New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, and The Conversation.
Dr. Nwankpa earned his Ph.D. in Information Systems from Kent State University and obtained his MBA from the University of Windsor. Additionally, he possesses a Master of Science degree from the Hanken School of Business. His academic career includes a prior position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where he played a pivotal role as the coordinator of the Ph.D. program in Information Systems, contributing significantly to the strategic development and enhancement of the business school’s offerings.
Beyond his responsibilities in teaching and research, Dr. Nwankpa is actively engaged in various external academic roles, notably serving as an external examiner for doctoral programs at institutions in Ghana. His excellence in research and teaching has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Farmer School of Business Senior Faculty Award for Research Excellence and the Richard K. Smucker Teaching Excellence Award: Outstanding Junior Professor. Dr. Nwankpa has been recognized among the 100 Most Commended Faculty members by graduating students at Miami University.
Dr. Nwankpa's leadership in advancing cybersecurity initiatives has been critical in the development of innovative programs and curricula that elevate the standards of cybersecurity education within his institution. He has successfully led efforts to secure significant research funding and has been a featured speaker at numerous national and international conferences, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Finland, Ghana, Germany, Nigeria, and Ireland, where he addresses vital issues concerning cybersecurity and digital business strategies. His papers have been nominated and selected for best paper awards at leading Information Systems conferences such as ICIS and AMCIS. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.
In recent years, Dr. Nwankpa has focused on using digital technologies such as analytics, cloud, social media, and mobile platforms to drive organizational strategies and socioeconomic development in developing countries. He is interested in research collaborations and consulting in digital business strategy, cybersecurity, social media, business analytics, and enterprise technology strategy.
Dr. Nwankpa serves as Associate Editor for the European Journal of Information Systems and as Associate Editor and co-chair for Information Systems conferences.
