Author: Create the Story

Stories can be found  everywhere! Inspire students to see the story behind every situation, explore different points of view, look beyond what they know, and discover the story the items of their research have to tell.

Even the simplest of items in their life has a story to tell. Open up these opportuities and help them get their creative flow!   Got Story?

Digital StoryTelling - Getting Started

Every story must have a problem or a situation that needs to be resolved.

Stories are not “Tell Abouts” or “Reports”.

Anything can become the subject of a story. Have students practice finding the story in a picture, an item of interest, research topic, story cube, nature, etc.

Use interesting images to practice finding the problem the image could depict.

  Guiding your Students

Plan the Story: Work in teams to practice developing a story plan using story arc, story core or story spine.

Speech to Text is a great way to have students start “writing” the story - using the story plan as their guide, speech to text allows students to use their words, rich vocabulary, and expression .... they can "tell" their story without fear of spelling or punctuation. Editing can come later - if necessary at all. After all, the final product will be digital.

Google Docs or other online sharing can be used for students to draft their stories.

•  Insert a table to create a storyboard

•  Google Draw-Create plans and graphic organizers for students to use to brainstorm their stories

•  Google Presentations - Use for online notecards

•  Use the Explore Tool in Docs, Presentations, and Draw to quickly locate filtered, copyright appropriate images, videos, and resources. Click and drag the image over to the page, and a formatted (MLA or APA) footnote is also inserted into the document for bibliographies and credits made easier

Start with the problem/situation/ incident.

Then ask...

What led up to the situation?

What was tried to resolve?

What was the resolution>

What was the lesson learned?
