The underlying theme of my research is the tension between media freedom and accountability. I approach my research from the liberal perspective that minimizing government involvement in media accountability is ideal, understanding that the power and pervasiveness of media in contemporary culture cannot go unchecked. My research program develops two branches of this theme: understanding the complexity of public attitudes about censorship, and examining audience perceptions of media and media effects (and the relationship of those perceptions to endorsing content restrictions).
