Jeff Barry, a switch-hitting major league baseball outfielder for the New York Mets and Colorado Rockies;
Jeff played 13 years of professional baseball from 1990 until his retirement from baseball in 2002.
Although baseball is Jeff's lifelong passion, Jeff was also the starting quarterback for the Medford High School Black Tornado football team (Medford, Oregon) guiding the Tornados to the 1985 big school state championship, a 14-13 win over Churchill High (Eugene, Oregon) during the school's final season before the high school split. The following year, Jeff became the first quarterback for the South Medford High Panthers, leading them to a 26-0 win over the rival North Medford Black Tornado in front of me and 8,500 of my fellow spectators in the inaugural Black & Blue Game.
Jeff went onto a full baseball scholarship at San Diego State University where he was awarded Freshman All-American his first year and became 2nd team All-American in his Sophomore and Junior years and a Western Athletic Conference All-Star.
Jeff was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 4th round of the 1990 MLB June Amateur Draft. He made his professional debut for the Jamestown (NY) Expos of the class A New York-Pennsylvania league. After a promotion to the West Palm Beach Expos in 1991, Jeff was traded to the New York Mets system for pitcher Blaine Beatty. Following promotions to (AA) Binghamton and (AAA) Norfolk, on June 9, 1995 Jeff made his major league debut for the New York Mets, pinch-hitting in a game at San Diego.
Jeff would play 15 games for the Mets before an off-season trade to the San Diego Padres for pitcher Pedro A. Martinez. After playing the 1996 season in the minors, Jeff signed as a free agent with the Colorado Rockies, playing in 89 big league games for Colorado during the 1998-99 seasons. Jeff would play several more years of minor league baseball for the Rockies, White Sox and Dodgers. He played a season with the Chiba Lotte Marines of Japan's Pacific League and a handful of games with the Mexico City Tigers before retiring from baseball in 2002.
Jeff is married to wife Rhonda, has two children, two step children, and is the Growth and Development Director for Alliance Trucking in Medford, Oregon. He runs Athletic Edge Baseball Academy in the afternoons (as of 2012).
Thank you Jeff for all the great sports memories!
