Scholarship Information
DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION: March 31, 2025
The Jackson County Historical & Genealogical Society Kansas will present a $300.00 scholarship to a graduating senior who resides within Jackson County, Kansas.
Requirements:
Must be a 2025 graduating senior who resides in Jackson County, Kansas
Must plan to pursue additional education: vocational, junior college, or college
Must submit in PDF format to the Society's email address the completed application form and a 500+ word original paper (see topic below) by the March 31, 2025 deadline. Sources must be identified in the submitted paper.

In the middle of the page where it says “Newspapers.com” KS Resident Access, follow the link to use this resource at no cost. You will need a Kansas driver’s license to register. On the next page, click on “Newspapers.com”.
At the top of the next page, fill in this information: Keyword - Red Cross; Date - 1914 to 1918; Location - Jackson County, Kansas.
Answer the question above by using at least three different Jackson County newspapers and summarize (or abstract verbatim) what the Red Cross did LOCALLY. Cite your sources. We are not interested in what the Red Cross was doing on the national scale.
Typed and double-spaced
Do NOT include a cover sheet or title page. Your email will serve as identification.
Do NOT include your name anywhere on the essay nor include any personal references that would identify you. All of this is so judging is "blind".
Additional attachments or posters, although wonderful for museum display with the winning paper, will not be used for the scholarship selection
Essays will be judged according to the following weighted categories
Ideas and Content: 25%
Voice: 25%
Organization and Word Choice: 35%
Sentence Fluency and Conventions: 15%
If acknowledgment of the electronic submission is not received within two days of submission, the applicant is responsible to follow-up with a telephone call about the submission. ONLY ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
The judges' decision is final.
Papers remain the property of the Jackson County Historical & Genealogical Society Kansas and may be published by the Society.
Scholarship will be awarded in late spring 2025.
